Frederick Douglass was a man who played a major role in putting an end to
slavery, in this essay more about his story.
Frederick Douglass was @ Slave whoWt i deceteeisiad toe ecten and treated wrong.
Douglass was a slave who witnessed siaves being beaten and treated wrong. He has
been through challenging events such as his fight with Mr. Covey who was his master at
the time. When he escaped he became an abolitionist(an antislavery speaker)and
spoke about his two topic
Frederick Douglass fells his readers about his personal experiences in order to prove
that people who support slavery are wrong by showing how slavery is bad for slaves
and how slavery corrupts slave holders/owners.
goot
People who defended slavery would often say slaves deserved to be beaten
brutally and forced to work in harsh conditions. Douglass argues that slaves are treated
terribly and beaten/whipped regularly. "He would then come out fresh in the evening, gooel. i.
ready to urge us on with his words, example and frequently with the whip”. This proved °°
that masters do beat/whip their slaves regularly because it shows that Covey beat his
slaves when they weren't workin
Douglass argues tha Slaves are given limited clothing, “The children unable to work in
the field had neither shoes, stockings, jackets, nor trousers given to them: their clothing yx Pye,
consisted of two coarse linen shirts per year. This shows that even the kids were given" premdie
a tiny amount of clothing which proves the point that slaves were given limited clothing. p220%,
Slaveholders realized what they were doing to slaves but didn’t realize how they were efolysis
affecting themselves.
White people would usually say that slavery doesn't affect white people ina
negative way. Douglass argues that Slavery makes slave owners mean + heartless and
changes their personalities. “Under its influence, the tender heart became stone, and ge!
the lamblike disposition gave way to one of tiger-ike fierceness. The first step inher Je-oyute —
downward course was in her ceasing to instruct me’. This shows that Mrs. Auld was MUR
corrupted by Slavery and started to become more and more evil by the second.
Therefore proving that Slavery corrupts Slaveholders. Douglass argues that slavery
gives Siaveholders the power of being able to hurt someone which can corrupt them.
Mir Covey succeeded in breaking me. | was broken in body, soul, and sprit, My natural Jeoe4
elasticity was crushed, my intellect languished, the disposition to read departed, the ahotisy,
cheerful spark that lingered about my eye died; the dark night of slavery closed in uponme; and behold a man transformed into a brute!”. This quote proves that Slaveholders
beat their slaves to a point where they're emotionally and physically broken. This also
proves that they beat their slaves a lot, they would have to in order to make them fee!
the way Douglass said he felt, This stated how slavery negatively affected the
slaveholders and that it can indeed negatively affect white people.
Frederick Douglass's purpose of writing his narrative was to bring attention to the
topic of slavery. Douglass is trying to teach his readers about how slavery is terrible for
slaves and how slavery corrupts slave holders by telling them about his personal life
experiences. Douglass played a major role in stopping slavery which is one of the
reasons it no longer exists in the majority of the U.S. gooot conch grin ,Name:
