Ms. Reisch Class 1 10/26/2016 A Long Walk to Water Essay In A Long Walk to Water the two characters Salva and Nya are living in a war and they work together even when they are different tribes, Salva and Nya are living in the Second Southern Sudanese Civil War surviving with different resources. They have tribes taking care of them. In the year 2009 Salva who is from the Dinka tribe goes to the Neur tribe to provide for the village. Salva and Nya survive in A Long Walk to Water since Salvay ), ¢/¢ : has mental strength and hope, a tribal relation ship and Nya has financial support. . erly Salva and Nya survives with perseverance and hope during the South Sudanese War. In the beginning of A Long Walk to Water, Salva is separated from his family when the war restarted. In chapter 2, page 9 the Salva continued to ask, "Where are we going? Where is eee Chat) my family? When will I see them again?” This example shows Salva having hope because he wants to find his family and wonders if he will see him again. Salva looks for his family but continues to walk with the tribe, Salva keeps going with the group yet he can't find his family. Salva tries to step up and go with the men but they tell him to stay with the others. On page 12 in chapter 2 a solider tells Salva "You are not a man yet. Don't be in such a hurry!" Salva was trying to step up to find his family showing hope and perseverance but the men see him as a kid with to much hope. Salva may have faced many challenges but Nya faces a lot of struggles along the way. On page 8 in chapter 2 Nya faces a challenge. "Then she picked up another thorn and used it to poke and prod at the first one.” Nya has, perseverance because she was in pain but kept going to where she needed to go. The book shows that Salva and Nya have perseverance and hope but also have tribal relationships. ‘The characters in A Long Walk to Water survive with tribal relationships. Salva has a tribal relationship after he was separated from his family and home. The relationship between Salva and the Dinka is strong since they are caring for him. In chapter 3, page 25, the text says that they would look ata ide to get the honey from the hive but they called him to see what they were doing and what they were going to. This shows that they want to vt Spee teach him how to do thing to survive on his own, They were also going to feast on the audles honey altogether. Nya also has a tribal relationship with the Nuer tribe by showing each other where and how to get water. In chapter 4, page 20 mother says to Nya "Take Akeer with you,"...’She needs to learn.” This shows that the older girls would show the young girls the path to get water and how to collect it. Another example of a tribal relationship is when Salva is with his Uncle and Marial was killed by a lion. Uncle says in chapter 7 page 41 he says "Salva, Ihave a gun. 1 will shoot any lion that comes near us.” Salva was worried when Marial died when a lion attacked him, Uncle wanted Salva to know he will protect him and ut, he is safe. These examples show that Salva and Nya have tribal relationships by teaching va, Vale and learning from each other and caring for each other as well, The characters don't only wet have tribal relationships they also have financial support. ‘The individuals in A Long Walk to Water survive with financial support. Salva has financial support when he moves to Rochester, New York and gets a new life and received clothes. In the book on page 92 chapter 15 it "Salva's arms were piled high with new clothes.” This show that the people taking care of him want to help and provide for him. ‘They bought him clothes with their money to provide for him, Nya also has financial support when they built a well and a school, The book says "With a well here, no one will have to go to the pond. So all the children will be able to go to school.." on page 103 chapter 17. Nya receives two kinds of financial support, a school and a well. The Dinka and Nuer built the school with the help of Salva and Elm Street School raising money. In chapter 6 page 99, the book says "He was going to college and had decided to study business.” This shows financial support because his adopted family paid for his education. This shows support because he receives an amount of money to go to college. This shows examples of support from people who want to help them and care for them. Salva and Nya survive during the Second Sudanese Civil War by using the resources that they have. They continue to survive with the violence and lack of water. In A Long. Walk to Water Salva and Nya overcome challenges by having Hope and Perseverance, Tribal Relationships, and Financial Support. Today the war Is over but the violence continues to strike South Sudan and still have a large lack of water. Salva has created an organization called Water for Sudan to provide water for villages that lack the amount.
