‘Should Lyddie sign the Petition?
In the novel Lyddie, the main character Lydia Worthen or Lyddie, she experiences many
troubles and many obstacles. Lyddies' family has faced a bear in their home in Chapter One of
Lydia. That is quiet a trouble, A bear in the house may have been a large trouble, but Lyides’ | yy J
mother sent Lyddie and her brother Charies to go and work to pay off debts. Lyddie was sent to ine a
a local tavern to work on call. Lyddie went to visit her brother and when she returned to work ak
she was fired. Lyddie decide to go south from Vermont to Massachusetts to start working at the ve
mills. Lyddie has received a lot of help through the process make more money, but the Way.
conditions aren't as great. Some people think Lyddie shouldn't sign the petition because she
needs to save money to support her family and to buy the farm. This is a good idea but Lyddie
is a young lady and she has to work in very harsh conditions like the ones in the work place.
People also think that she shouldn't sign because she would get blacklisted. Lyddie should sign
the petition because she would work less hours with the same wages, work has sped up and
increased but wages haven't and she is working 13 to 14 hour days in bad air conditions and
work loads. dovit Spea. to Vead sn
Lyddie has to work a lot of hours with a very large work toas(Yo0) ay think Lyddie is
making much for the amount of work she does, but that’s not the case-Lyddie gets paid by the
‘amount of mills she operates, not by the amount she makes. Betsy reminds Amelia and tells
Lyddie her past of working at the mills and how the work is now. "I could do a thirteen hour day
to spare, But in those days | had a hundred thirty spipdfés to tend. Now I've twice that many ata
speed that would make the devil curse” (Paterson 91). This should be a reason for Lyddie to
sign the petition because Betsy work the same hour for many years and the work has increased
not a little bit, it has doubled. Working a thirteen hour day is exhasting, but if Lyddie signs the
petition, she can make a change so the women can work ten hour days. "Time is more precious
than money, Lyddie gir. If only | had two more free hours of an evening..."(Paterson 91} Betsy
is telling Lyddie that working a ten hour day would be better, but Lyddie thinks they will get paid
Jess. Betsy says "Time Is more precious that money." The message Betsy is trying to bring fo
Lyddie is that if they work less hours, it wouldn't matter how much they get payed as long a they
get rest. Referring to the last quote Betsy says that time is worth more than their wages but now
we are going to look at a quote of when Betsy and Amelia were having an argument. Betsy says
she is going to mg¥e to Ohio. The text states, “I'm worn out, Amelia, We're all worn
out."(Paterson 91). Betsy was describing the conditions of work and started arguing with Amelia
saying that the amount of work done makes them tried. After the amount of work that has
doubled makes the workers tried making the thirteen hour day feel longer. In this paragraph,
have only seen parts that speak of work loads and hours that many of the women face. Bet
‘works long hours with double the work load and is worn out as well as everyone that works
there. Lyddie also has more things happen to her during her work, showing that working
conditions are very harsh for a thirteen hour day.Lyddie should sign the petition because the working conditions are very harsh to work a
thirteen hour day. Many of the conditions of the work place were very harsh. Lyddie worked very
hdd in bad conditions for thirteen hours six days a week. At a point of the book, many workers
{got sick, but so did her sister Rachel. "Silly cough’...*All the girls have them.” (Paterson 140).
Lyddie was telling this to Rachel and Rachel didn't even work at the mills, but all the workers
had to cough which shows the conditions are harsh. Not only the conditions of the work place
but the people there. Lyddie had a fever and was very vulnerable and Mr. Mardsen mistreated
her. "She tried to pull back from him*..."He was bringing his strange little mouth closer and
closer to her fiery face.”..."she raised her booted foot and stomped her heel down with all her
might." (Paterson 129). As much as the work place conditions are bad, the condition of ged yon
treatment is bad to the workers. Lyddie was sick, she was tried and once she realized what was ° &
going on she defended herself and she could do more like defend herself by signing the petition.
‘The working conditions of the work piace and its workers are harsh as well. Lyddie had a very
high fever and caused her to be very tried like in the quote before. The text states, "She was too
tried now at night to copy out a page of Oliver to paste fo her loom. It hardly mattered when she
had time to study it?” (Paterson 98). Lyddie was very thUS before she got sick and when the
Conditions of the air were thick and hot. Lyddie has a lot of work and isn't able to get things done
during the evening and if she signs the petition, she will only have to work ten hours and have
three more hours of rest. Lyddie does a lot to support her family like working in harsher
conditions. She works for a fong time and works with high heat and mistreatment just to support
her family and should sign the petition.
In the book Lyddie, Lyddie has faced many challenges that cause sickness and
{tiedness to support her family. She has a lot of working to do without out of time to get a lot of
rest. Lyddie should sign the petition because she would work less hours with the same wages,
work has sped up and increased but wages haven't and she is working 13 to 14 hour days in
oad air conditions and work loads. Lyddie supports herself out in many ways and she would be
able to work less hours if she would sign the petition she would be helping herself when she is
taking care of herself and her sister. Lyddie has supported a lot of people in her life and she can
support herself and get herself to sign the petition. If you support her it might change her
decision. This is how Lyddie gets treated and how she works and the kind of conditions she
works in.cRITERIA
