Class 1 52317 Ms. Reisch Slavery is Terrible For All Many people think that slavery was bad for slaves but it was also bad for slave owners as aw, weil. Frederick Douglass writes his narrative to explain his life as a slave from attempts of wor escaping to getting beaten to escaping. This story was made to get the public to have empathy for slaves. Douglass explains his successes and failures to see haw Wé has developed from a slave to an abolitionist. Douglass is trying to tell slavery supporters that slavery is terrible on both sides of the panels including "Slavery is Terrible for slaves” and "Slavery corrupts slave owners", then that slavery corrupting slave owners makes slavery worse for slaves. a Slavery supporters think slavery is fine and that the way they are treated is fair but, don't see that slavery is terrible for slaves. However, Douglass wanted the public to have empathy for slaves. People wonder why he wrote this story but, Douglass wants the people to see a slaves point of view and see the conditions of treatment to clothing. Douglass states in his narrative "Their yearly clothing consisted of two coarse linen shirts, one pair of linen trousers like the shirts, on jacket, one pair of trousers for winter, made of coarse negro cloth, one pair of stockings, and one pair of shoes; the whole of which could not have cost more than 7 dollars.” (Douglass excerpt 2, paragraph 2) This proves Douglass's point that slavery is terrible due to the fact that slaves received very coarse (rough) clothes to work in everyday. This shows that the conditions are terrible as the clothes are then working in hot conditions. Douglass argues that slaves had no freedom to go places and they need permission, so they would make a plan to make it seem that they had permission. The text states "The week before our intended start, I \wrote several protections, one for each of us." (Douglass excerpt 5, paragraph 4) This shows that // slaves are very limited to what they can do and must receive permission from their slave owner. He use this example because he wants to show the limitations of going places. xamples_ show how slaves were treated and how slavery was terrible for slaves, but now jill see how slavery corrupted slave owners. peat ta vende People may have thought that the slave owners attitude towards people were different ‘then towards slaves, but, slavery corrupted them, making them feel more powerful. Douglass argues that slave owners were once kind, but the power of owning a human corrupted them. Douglass states in the text "But, alas! This kind heart had but a short time to remain such. The sty@Yjjtal poison of itresponsible power vas already in her hand." (Douglass Excerpt 3, Paragraph 3) ve This proves Douglass's point because this kind woman that never had intentions to hurt a slave, she gets pressured to put all the work on the slave. However, Douglass moves with Mr. and Mrs. ‘Auld and Mrs. Auld starts to teach Douglass. *...she very kindly commenced to teach me the ‘A.B.C's...Just at this point of progress, Mr. Auld found out what was going on, and at once forbade Mrs. Auld to instruct me further..." (Douglass Excerpt 3, Paragraph 4) This example proves that slave owners control others on how to treat their slaves.
