Linda Sue Park wrote a book called "A Long Walk To Water” about Salva and Nya, who are two eleven year old kids struggling to meet and their needs. They live in a dangerous land where war and tribal conflict created a dangerous situation. They are both in different time periods, but they both have hard lives.
