1. Introduction
The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) allows students to choose inter-disciplinary,
intra-disciplinary, and skill-based courses (across disciplines) according to their learning
needs, interests and aptitude. The CBCS not only offers opportunities and avenues to
learn core subjects, but also provides additional avenues of learning through the
choosing of elective courses at different levels namely Elective Foundation, Disciplinary
Elective and Open Elective courses.
As per the UGC guidelines, the following programme structure is suggested for each of
the Post Graduate Programme (Table 1).
3. Electives
3A. Disciplinary Electives Elective course chosen from within the parent
discipline or related discipline of study.
3B. Open Electives Elective course chosen from any other discipline
of study.

1 Please note that this format of CBCS is not yet applicable to the students of School of Education,
School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance, School of Vocational Education, Centre for
Lifelong Learning, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies, Centre for Studies in
Sociology of Education, and Centre for Education, Innovation and Action Research. They may ignore
this announcement accordingly.
The AC approved list of Elective Foundations and Open Elective Courses are given
below:
The Elective Coordinating Committee will coordinate the Open Elective courses. The list
of Open Elective courses that are being offered to the Batch 2017-19 are given in Table
4. The Open Elective courses will be offered during Semester II (from November 2017 to
January 2018). It is mandatory that each student completes the required 2 credits of
Open Electives from anyone of these two slots. Thus, each student has to take a
minimum of ONE course from the list of Open Elective courses given in Table 4. Non-
completion of the Open Elective will lead to supplementary status. A maximum cap of
teacher: student ratio of 1: 60 per class will be maintained for each course. Students will
be admitted to the course of their choice on a first-come first-serve basis.
Important Information:
1. Please discuss with your faculty mentors in your School or Centre before
finalizing your choice of courses.
2. It is mandatory that the students earn the necessary 8 credits for the CBCS
Courses to pass their respective Masters programme.
3. An Elective Foundation / Open Elective course will be offered only if there are a
minimum number of 10 students.
4. The Enrollment for the Elective Foundation and Open Electives will commence
during September 2017, along with the online course enrolment of the regular
courses.
5. In case, the student enrolled to a particular Elective Foundation / Open Elective
course feels that the course is not meeting the students interest or
expectations, the respective student can drop out after the first class (first 2
hours) of an already enrolled Elective Foundation / Open Elective course, but
have to enroll to another Elective Foundation / Open Elective course before the
next days commencement of Elective Foundation / Open Elective Classes
respectively.
6. The duration of the Elective Foundation and Open Electives will be from 15th
November 2017 to 4th January 2018.
7. The Elective Foundation courses will be offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays
every week from 4.30 PM 6.30 PM in a semi-semester mode (4 hours per
week).
A. The Open Elective courses will be offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays every
week from 2.20 PM 4.20 PM in a semi-semester mode (4 hours per week).
8. The evaluations for these courses will be held in the month of January 2018.
(10th January: Elective Foundation and 11th January: Open Elective).
