Unit Rationale

This unit entitled Muscular and Skeletal System is designed for 3rd grade. The unit will
integrate information and inquiry lessons that will teach the students about these body systems.
Students will learn about the functions of each system, the parts of the systems, how the systems
work together, and how to keep them healthy.
Students will complete five lessons that will include inquires and activities to enhance
their learning. First the students will learn about the skeletal systems location and parts. Next the
students will learn about the muscular systems location and parts. Then the students will learn
about the functions of each system. After that they will experiment with how the muscular and
skeletal system interact and work together. Lastly the students will explore ways to keep these
systems healthy.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards, Standard 10.1.3.B:
Identify and know the location and function of the major body organs and systems, outlines the
need for students to obtain this knowledge. Students will be applying process knowledge that
enables them to become independent leaders through inquiry and design to understand the
importance and function of our body systems.
When this unit is complete students will be able to identify the location and important
characteristics of the muscular and skeletal system, identify how the two systems work with one
another, explain how to keep these systems and healthy, and the importance of keeping them
healthy. This content is key in a students ability to understanding, explore, and explain their
bodies and important biological factors.
