ElectroPistons: Introduction
ElectroPistons from Direct Thrust Designs Ltd are a
new and cost-effective alternative to air pistons. They
have been designed for arduous industrial applications
and use electrical power rather than compressed air
as their energy source. This eliminates the need for air
compressors and the many complicated, expensive and
often polluting components that go with them.
Because ElectroPistons only take electrical power when energised, they are far more economical
to operate as opposed to air pistons powered by continually running air compressors.
Principle of Operation
ElectroPistons use electro-magnetism to obtain the
motive force. Especially configured electrical coils
in the block react against magnets embedded in the
rod to achieve powered motion. There is no contact
between the coils and the rod passing through them.
The force remains constant throughout the stroke
-unlike solenoids.
The greater the supplied current, the greater the push/pull force available. It is therefore easy
to obtain precisely the force(s) required in either direction by simply setting the corresponding
currents.
Using proprietary bearings to guide the running components, they are designed for continuous
operation, and have been life tested for over 100,000,000 cycles, equivalent when correctly
installed to continuous operation at a rate of one stroke per second over a sixteen hour shift, five
days per week for seven years.
Applications
The number of applications for ElectroPistons is virtually limitless, some major examples are:
Assembly Lines
Positioning components on / off fast moving production lines / conveyor belts
Medical Industry
Inserting / positioning components. Operation of levers, ports and gates.
Food Industry
Packing, crimping, slicing operations, Vibrating ( shaking), code stamping.
Security / Safety
Operation of safety locks, gates and clamps.
Electronics Industry
Component insertion and assembly, crimp operation, circuit board population.
Machinery
Interlocks push / pull interaction, component testing, positioning.
Automotive
Valve operating, actuators, lock operation, selection levers, component testing
(especially at - 80)
