Summary: In 2007, there was a decrease in school crime and violence but students still
reported that they did not feel completely safe at school. Some school officials are taking
initiative and implementing school-police partnerships in the urban areas to deter the crime and
violence away from the schools. New York City reported their effect of the initiative and the
results found that even with increased police presence, the students at these impact schools still
experienced higher than normal problems linked to future criminality. There were higher rates of
student suspensions and lower rates of attendance in these impact schools in New York. The
police presence did not seem to be successfully deterring the crime from the area like it was
hoped to. After taking a closer look at the impact schools in New York, these schools are found
to be more crowded and receive less funding, which makes them not as appealing for students
and might be the cause for the increased criminality and bad behavior.
