What I notice
The class was doing an integrated reading and
social studies lesson. The teacher was reading a
book about what a community is and the
different things that you find in communities
such as neighborhoods, parks, schools, etc. The
student seemed to know what a community was
and they did a good job interacting with the
teacher. I more so saw a lesson that was more
reading oriented although the students were
learning some social studies things. The
students answered questions that the teacher
asked and the lesson seemed to be very
relatable to them because they were from the
same community. The students were given
social studies related vocabulary for the week
and they were told what they meant and they
worked with them all week long. The social
studies lesson seemed fun for the students and
they were asked verbal questions about the
lesson and did not write anything down.

I had never seen an integrated lesson before so
it was nice to see one. I noticed that they were
more into the reading aspect of the lesson. I
think that the social studies lesson that they
were learning about was good for them to learn
about their community and know what the
aspects of a community. I think since the
students were still getting used to school and
they were still learning about their peers. I think
that the lesson that the first-grade team came
up with was a good lesson for the first graders
to either refresh on from kindergarten or learn
for the first time. I think that it was a good idea
to do an integrated lesson because the students
really do not have much time for social studies
and the teacher often told me that they dont
even get to social studies some days because
they have to finish math and language arts
before they can move on. My teacher is the only
teacher on my team that does vocabulary and
she says that she tries to do social studies
related ones so the students are able to know
words that they are supposed to know from the
social studies standards.
