HISTORY FACTS: New York is the most populous city of the homonymous state, and
the United States of America and the second largest urban center in the Americas,
after Mexico City. New York City is among the largest and most populated urban areas
of the world.
Since the late nineteenth century is one of the world's leading trade and financial
centers worldwide. New York is considered as a global city, given its influence
worldwide in the media, in politics, education, entertainment, arts and moda. The
artistic and cultural influence of the city is the strongest in the world. This city is the
headquarters of the United Nations, which also makes an important point of
international relations.
The city has many places and buildings recognized worldwide. For example, the Statue
of Liberty, located on the eponymous island, and Ellis Island, which received millions of
immigrants who came to America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Wall Street has been one of the world's leading financial centers since the Second
World War and is the headquarters of the New York Stock Exchange. The city has also
concentrate many of the tallest buildings in the world, among which are the Empire
State Building and the twin towers of the World Trade Center, which were demolished
in the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The city is also the birthplace of many American cultural movements, including the
Harlem Renaissance in literature and visual art, abstract expressionism (also known as
the New York School) in painting, and hip hop, 6 punk and Tin Pan Alley In music.
The city of New York is the setting for many famous films. It is the second largest film
production center in the United States after Hollywood. This is explained by the fact
that part of the Big Apple is conducive to filming, with skyscrapers and many small
districts that correspond to various lifestyles.
