WHAT IS COMPACT HOUSING?

The term compact house is one of several terms to
describe homes that were designed to be small or
compact.
The tiny house movement (also known as the "small
house movement") is a description for
the architectural and social movement that
advocates living simply in small homes. There is
currently no set definition as to what constitutes as a
tiny house; however, a residential structure under 500
2
square feet (46 m ) is generally accepted to be a tiny
home.

What are tiny houses? The tiny house

movement? Tiny living?
Simply put, it is a social movement where people are
choosing to downsize the space they live in. The typical
American home is around 2,600 square feet, whereas the
typical small or tiny house is between 100 and 400 square
feet. Tiny houses come in all shapes, sizes, and forms, but
they enable simpler living in a smaller, more efficient space.

EXAMPLE

1. SYDNEY APARTMENT
Australian architect Nicholas Gurney has used bespoke joinery, sliding
partitions and moveable furniture to make the most of limited space
inside this 24-square-metre apartment in Sydney.

To make sure each of the clients' belongings has its own place in the
space-tight apartment, he followed a Japanese method of organisation
known as 5S.

Aim to encourage a more disciplined
and efficient use of the space.

"The 5S apartment promotes living with less. It was intended the design
deliberately place importance on selecting, organising and caring for
one's belongings," said Gurney.

ADVANTAGES OF MOBILE HOMES

They are more mobile. RVs are made to be moved; they are built with
lightweight materials.
They are factory prefabricated and use less material as compared to other
housing therefore cutting cost.
Easily available, less construction time.

Give Every Space More than One Purpose

For example, you may have a couch area for relaxing during the day or sitting to do
work on your computer. At night, though, you might be able to flip it out into a bed, a
table that folds into the wall creating more space when needed.

Avoid Partitions
One way you can get more from the space in your tiny house is by keeping
unnecessary partitions out of it. This is how you get a home office, dining room and
guest bedroom all in one.

Windows
Aside from bringing in natural light, windows will also help make the home feel
bigger. Provide adequate amount of windows for light and ventilation is important.

High ceilings
High ceilings gives more storage space, more head space so the house doesnt
feel *claustrophobic.

house from the downstairs living area and bedroom to the upstairs
workspace.

A ladder leads up to the lofted workspace, a

much more space efficient choice than
stairs.

Stairs lead up to a rooftop patio with
endless possibilities.

Upstairs are more sliding windows

for an interior space that feels
extremely spacious.

PROS

Tiny houses are a more affordable option (compared to a full-size

home) for debt-free living

Tiny houses offer an alternative (especially for younger and older

generations) to the increasingly difficult, traditional path to home-
ownership.

Building a tiny house is offers mobility and flexibility for anyone

who does not wish to be tied to specific location.

Tiny houses are a great way to minimize environmental impact by

living in a much more efficient and sustainable structure.

Mini homes create simpler living they are an easy to maintain,

self-contained housing option for those of retirement age.

Building a tiny house is a fun/challenging/rewarding and

educational project used to share alternative housing options to
the next generation of home owners/builders!

CONS

People interested in building a small home can encounter

institutional discrimination

Less room for hospitality.

Less storage space = more trips to the store.

We have to manually empty a composting toilet.

No personal privacy
