Introduction ‘The following tables present, in the opinion of the writer, the best vshies of the surface tensions presently available forthe eompeunds listed. The compounds which ‘were studied are these which are liguid im the general vicinity of s00m temperature and below; the exvosenic fiuide are alo included. The his best to In anmapeehanive in coverage within this range, Reforaneue rum from the 19th century through 1965. Tn addition to compiling the deta available in the Iiterature the writer has evalosted these deta and estimated Their religilty. A discussion of the methods used in evaluating the data and determining their reliability is ven belo. 1.1, Contents of the Tables The tabies have been arranged, at far as possible, with ‘elated compounds inthe order of their increasing molecu Tey veightss Wis un enceptia dhe tables pres ses of the surface tension et integral values of the temperature in degrees Celsiue. The exception ie the final table which conten da forthe compos that hate ben did st only one lempersture ‘The range of temperatures covered in the tales for a given compound rollece the range covered by the et for tote of meacuremente selected as most relible. For the large majority of the compounds the dependence of the Peso surface tension (given in dyn/em)! on the temperetare can be given as e0nb where @ and B are constants and (is the temperature in degrees Celsius. The valves of @ and B obtained hy least- yuases Ding ef the expermmental values are gaven ih the tables and can be used to interpolate within the ‘operstiona) range, The numbers, ey, given in the tables are standard deviations of the residuals resulting {rom the Bt and give a measure of the seater of the experi- imental measurements about the line. For afew compounds, for which measurements were available over a rather Jaige tempessture range, the van der Wasls-Guegenteim ‘equation (ref. 82] was sppliod. In thete cases the equa- tion used is included in the table. ‘An estimate of the reliability of the data i given in each table ad will be fovnd in the space above the clumne ‘of numbers or in footnotes. Where one investigator reported an extended series of measurements in one table sul used the same apputaias and procedures throughout, the same reliability value was assumed to apply to all entries in the table ‘Whenever the information ie available, the method of measurement is given. together with the nature of the atmosphere to which the liguid was exposed during the measurement. Air ie designated as Az nitrogen, Ne: hydro- ‘gon, By holm Hes ote the case of measurements nade ‘within cloced system. the liguid was in equilibrium with its own vapor. Thiecituation i indicated hy the letter. V. 1.2, The rigures For a number of liquide, for which several sete of Imeasuremems over & temperature range exiet plots were made comparing the valuce eclested by the writer with those measured experimentally or selected by other workers. These deviation plots are shin in figures 1-56. ‘The 56 liquids represent those liquids for which the most ata are aveilable, with the exception of weter. A plot ‘was not given for water since the surface tension of water Fs known with euficient precision thot a plot of the ree rmmenaed vsles sine! the principal meseurememte ss listed in table 86, ould show no deviations on a scale ‘comparable with that of the ether figures. Also Gittene [72 as] has recently made.» fnegrained analyse of the ata for water and his recommended values differ negligiy frem those recommended here. 1.3. Finding o Given Compound and the Index ‘The presentation of the datz involved formidable prob- Jems in nomenclature. Since the measurements cited cover 8 time span of nearly 100 years, many of the names supplied in the original papers had to be changed to make them conform 10 modern usage and hence make ‘them intllgile 10 as large a body of readers es possible, ‘An attempt was mile to fallow the practices of Chemical SURFACE TENSION OF LIQUIDS 24s Abstracts ip the text and in indexing. Trivial names, oF names from other systems of nomenclature which are widely used are usually cross referenced in the Indes. Further details are provided at the start of the Index. ‘The compounds are grouped in the tables according to chemical type, and this is reflected in the naming and rmumbering of the teblee ewlly. the pre tale far = given compound can be found by looking at the List of Tables. However, compounds for which data are avail- able only at a single temperature are grouped together. Furthermore, an author making systematic meesurements ‘on a class of compounds sould occasionally include some ‘compounds of another class which provided interesting comparicont hermes of strugtural relationshiper for ‘example, en author studying esters of a given acid might include measurements on the acid itself. Because the interest provided by the comparisons may still exist for many readers and because the estimate of error tends 10 remain constant within 2 given series of this typo, such tables were included as they were initially presented. In any event all compounds im the tables can be Jooated in ‘the Index. 1.4. The Selection of the Recommended Dote ond the Estimation of Reliability ‘The ‘election of dats to he recommended and the estimation of their reliability involve several factors, the ‘meet important of which are (a) amount of dats available, {) method of measurement, (e) purty of compound, (2) uality of apparatus end assembly, () experimental wvectigater. The interplay fof these factors in the ease of each ecmpound oF set of rmeaturements will not be described in detail. However, in what follows the principles used by the writer in the selection of the data and the estimation of their reliability ‘ell be given. procedures (0) experience o A review of the literature tom 1884) 10 the present time reveals that surface tension measuroments for a large number of liquide heve heen reported but once. Since it war dogmed desirable to male the present sompil tion a comprehensive 28 possible, these were inchided regardless of their probable degree of accuracy. It should be clear that there is no direct check on the accuracy of the measuremeris on there compounds, and that the accuracy is estimated indirectly from the other factors listed above. ta tabulated in the tables which fallow were measured hy one oF more of the static methods Isee ref. 108a]. These methods are concerned with liquid systems whose surfaces are relatively stationary and have ceisted Jong enovgh to permit she contiguous phases to iain a state of equilibrium with them. ‘The method wien 4s uly static snvorves she sponte: ‘neous rise of a liquid in @capiary tube. It isthe simplest ‘The surface tension and most accurate and can be used oer a wide temperature range. The experimental conditions are so clearly defined and the mathematical theory so simple that the accuracy Of the measurements 15 limited largely to the design of the egpillarimeter and any procedural errors introduced by the operator. "The eapillary.rice apparaine hac namerons_ variants Many novel designs have appeered in the literature: some, 10 meet special experimental conditions: others, 10 obtain precise results with « minimum of liguids end fill others, to exrcumvent the ime-consuming elfort n= volved in the selection and testing of component parts of the capllarimeter. Although the capillary-rise method is seeepted s¢ the vltimate standard far the determinetion ‘of liquid. surface-tensions, the fact remains that high precision is obtained only by rigorously conforming to fertain structoral and dimensional specifications in de- signing the capilarimeter. Three directly measurable com ponents only are involved in the espillary-rise equation. ‘Thus, the determinate and indeterminate errors. are seletvsly Fawr and. thorofore; the ancwrece For liguide which form an appreciable glassliguid contact angle, alternative methods. such ss the maximum bubhle-pressure or dropeweight. are generally used. The experimental. procedures for these are somewhat more complex, but in the hands of an experienced and expert ‘operator the results are very reliable. One fundamental requisite, probably the most im- portant in determining the acevracy of surface tension ‘ety ie the purity of the compounds involved: Although compounds of very high purity are now readily available, thie was decidedly mot the ease even a few years ago. when ‘ost investigators had to prepare their ow compounds. Therefore, in the evaluation of rurface tension data eareful atiention must be paid to the efforts investigators have ‘made to obtain their compounds in pure form and to document their purity. Other things being equal, surface tension measure iments made in recent years on a given compound are probcbly more accurate than those reported previously ‘The protable purity of the compound played an importa role in the decision of the writer in selecting a given set of datz for the tables. This selection was frequently ited hy advice fran muthoritce in emical propotetie methods who reviewed the various reports on the com: pounds involved. 1133s been pointed out tha a given method for measuring ‘the liguid surface tension may have many variants, These ‘manifest themselves in variations of design of the principal apparatus and in the organization of the various essential parts of the total assembly. The writer has observed that ‘equally experienced operstors using different variants of te tame technigue on the same compound ca obra difering results. In comparing different measurements, Phys Chem: Rt Date, Vl 1, M4 1972 B46 JOSEPH J. JASPER other things being equal, the writer has a preference for ‘the simpler apnaratus + apie Prin ‘The writer attsched grester weight 10 those papers in which the experimenter ether gave replicate measurements that allowed a measure of random errars to be derived or Gerived such a measure himeelf. Fe peters eth eeear Some investigators conducted extensive seriee of ‘measurements over 2 period of years. When this occurred it wer uevally poesible to compare their results in some: cases with resulie of other workers of recognized ca Debits, and thas obtain an cotimate of thoir ncliabibty. ‘When diccrepancies occurred the writer geve greater weight to the reeulis of sn investigator with a proven record of relisbility 1 feinatin of eity ‘The factors listed above were not only used in selection from among competing dsta sets but also in determining the reliability cf a given data set, In addition the writer viilized the following sources in estimating relibiity: reliability estimates made by the author of the compiled ales whish appear in the Intemationel Coitca! Pater ‘estimates made by the investigetor in reporting hie measure- rents, ealeulations of the magnitude of random errors, and estimates hesed on comparisons with data of known reliably 2. Proface to Index of Compounde ‘This Index has been put together using the general principles which apply in the indexing of Chemieal b- Siracs (CA). ‘Uhe indexing system of CA has evolved through the years and is exible enough to allow a certain number of exceptions established by historical usage. It is not claimed that this Index vonforsm prevively with current CA usage, but a substantial effort has been made to uso names that are unambiguous and readily recognized by current Yorkers in the fel ‘The principle of organization on @ functional Isis followed by CA has been used, so that “butyl acetate” is indexed as “acetic acid, butyl ester”. The reader is referred to CA for a detailed description of the principles used. Trivial names, names from earlier systems of nomen- clature which have wide acceptance, and, in some eases, alternate ways of entering the same name in the index Ihave been included as cross references in many cases although no attempt has been made to he exhaustive, ‘The number of the table in which the compound can Be found follows the name of the compound. A second ‘number in italic type indicates that data on the compound are shown in the figure of that number. 7.
