LESSON SUBJECT: Humanities 8
LESSON TITLE: 6 Elements of ELA w/ Introduction to the Italian Renaissance
GRADE: Grade 8
LESSON DATE: November 10th, 2017

RATIONALE
The Italian Renaissance was a pivotal moment not just in western history, but for arguably, all of
humanity. The rebirth took place after one of the worst plagues in history, killing an estimated
25 million people globally. Some of the most well known artists to date perfected their craft
during this time period, due in part to the patronage of the Medici family. Scientific discoveries
that are still used today were founded back then, and last but absolutely not least, literature
rivalling Shakespeares were written then. To better understand the greatness that was the Italian
Renaissance, it is important that we learn about the different strands of ELA since all 6 mediums
are used to teach us about this golden age in history.

LEARNING INTENTIONS
Students will learn the 6 elements of English Language arts and how they relate to texts from
around the world. This will link the elements of ELA with the Italian Renaissance. Students will
be able to identify how different texts can be related to the past and present and how we can
experience these texts in many forms. The intention is for students to combine the ideas of ELA
and Social Studies and successfully work together in order to move through the stations and
discover the meaning of why these elements are important.

PREREQUISITE CONCEPTS AND SKILLS

Students will have already had lessons on the the previous time period; the Medieval Period.
They had already learned different styles of art and the 7 elements, such as; shape, line, form,
colour, texture, space, value. They will have practiced different writing styles and experienced
different texts without it being discussed in a formal setting. They should also have a strong
grasp of literary devices, since they are commonly used in literature and can offer a wealth of
additional information.

MATERIALS AND RESOURCES (REFERENCES) NEEDED FOR THIS LESSON

Teacher will need:
- Projector, computer, powerpoint, map of Italy and Western Europe, all materials for each
station, worksheet for students to fill out their thoughts as they go around the station,

Students will need:

- Pen/pencil, paper, small notebook to take notes at each station/iPad

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION (ACCOMMODATIONS)

- Students who are having difficulty writing or carrying a notebook to stations may use a
tablet.
- This accomodation is important for students who cannot physically use pen and paper for
this activity.
- Students may work individually and write down their thoughts or discuss with their group

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

- Students will be assessed while the teacher rotates around the room and listens to students
interpreting the art and texts; relating to ELA and the Renaissance
- Assess their drawing/art piece of just colours and shapes depicting their feelings toward
the texts; ask them how they felt about the art they see? Why do they think art was
important during the Renaissance?
- Since collaboration is such an essential part of the new curriculum, we will be assessing
their ability to work in close proximity with others; to share ideas, receive constructive
criticism, and last but not least, their leadership skills
