- People with head injuries show little to no visible signs of injury on neuroimaging
- But still have significant cognitive deficits, often so severe that they cannot resume their
preinjury lifestyles

o Kurt Goldstein a pioneer of neuropsychology was an expert in neurology,
psychology, and psychiatry
1940s first neuropsych tests were developed (neuropsychology 1.0) to
determine overall brain damage
Was thought that one test could be developed to detect brain damage
Impossible
o Most people who are referred to a neuropsychological assessment are referred due to
rehabilitation, neurological disease, or psychiatric issues
o Functional brain imaging
Neuroimaging changed the role of the NP from where is the lesion
(neuropsychology 2.0) to what is this persons cognitive strengths and
weaknesses?
o The most common question relates to general cognitive functioning
o Eric Zillmer (2004) said primary way to study the behavior of the brain is
