are worth a mention
Theres quick Kash, a bow to Cheyenne and Bronc Marriott and even a few Bubbas for good measure

Whats in a name?
At the 69th annual National High
School Finals Rodeo in Gillette, you
might ask instead whats in a state?
Dakota continues to be the most
popular state name at Gillettes second
straight year of hosting the worlds
largest youth rodeo. And for the sec-
ond straight year, none of the Dakotas
are from North or South Dakota. Go
figure.
A year ago, there were only four
Dakotas. There are six in 2017, includ-
ing two who were here a year ago,
bareback rider Dakota Fry of Leon,
Iowa, and Dakota Melton of Post
Falls, Idaho, who competes in trap
shooting for Washington.
Joining them are Dakota Arnold
from Jemison, Alabama. A twin, hes
also a sharpshooter competing in boys
cutting, light rifle and trap.
Dakota Morris of Pierz, Minnesota,
is his states bull riding champion.
Also riding high is Dakota Keenan
of Maricopa, Arizona, the 2017 rookie
of the year in her state. Shell compete
in goat tying.
Finally, if those arent enough
Dakotas for you, theres Dakoda
Boyce, 14, of Romoland, California,
who will compete in light rifle.
The Dakotas arent the only states
recognized by names in the NHSFR, as
usual.
Nevada is continuing its appearance
with Nevada Dynneson of Osoyoos,
British Columbia, who is back for a
second year to compete in barrel rac-
ing.
Then theres a Dakota athlete with
Nevada for a first name.
Nevada Berquist, 15, of Watford
City, North Dakota, will compete in
team roping.
Montana Martin of Evanston also is
adding to the state names. The break-
away roper, 18, competes for Utah.
And whats a rodeo without a Bubba
or two, or three? Theres Bubba Greig
of Estherville, Iowa, a 16-year-old
bull rider; Bubba Lipps of Casper, an
18-year-old boys cutter; and Bubba
Luttrell of Prineville, Oregon, a
15-year-old light rifle competitor.
If youre short on Bubbas, theres

The top two most popular cowboy pr
cowgirl names among the contestants is
Cheyenne or Sheyenne or Shyanne
and Kash or Cash. Both are some-
thing of a tip-of-the-cowboy-hat or a
nod to the foundations of rodeo.
Nod to Cheyenne
None of the Cheyennes are returning
cowgirls at the NHSFR.
Queen Cheyenne Owens, 16, of
Truman, Minnesota, is representing
that state, while Cheyenne Garmon
of Troutman, North Carolina, is com-
peting in barrels, goat tying and pole
bending.
Cheyenne Bartling of Sand Springs,
Oklahoma, will compete in goat tying
and light rifle. Shes her school vale-

dictorian, while goat tyer Shyanne
Bauerle of Jourdanton, Texas, is an A
and B honor roll student.
Sheyenne Anderson of Palmyra,
Missouri, will compete in breakaway
roping and Sheyenne Hammond of
Valentine, Nebraska, is a barrel racer.
Both Sheyennes are age 17.
Finally, theres Shyanna Cahoy of
Wyoming, 18, who will compete in
breakaway roping.
Kaycee reigns
Kaycee, Wyoming, is the former
home of world champion bronc rider
and country singer Chris LeDoux. Its
also the home of Larry Sandvick, an
NFR qualifier.
Now three Kaycees are giving a
nod to the town, including Kaycee
Hollingback of Wilberton, Oklahoma,
who will compete in breakaway roping

Kaycee Szymanksi of Sturgis, South
Dakota, will compete in light rifle
and Kaycee Rogers of Loon Lake,
Washington, will saddle up in goat
tying and breakaway roping.
If that isnt enough, theres one more
bow to Wyoming. Sheridan Clark of
Weatherford, Texas, is competing in
girls cutting. Her moniker is the same
name as that rival town in Wyoming for
Gillette sports fans.
The Smiths
Last year, Riggin Smith of Winterset,
Iowa, competed in Gillette. This year,
hes back in saddle bronc.
Hes joined by Hazen Smith of
Malad City, Idaho, who, appropriately,
will compete in steer wrestling, where
hell rely on his hazer.
Calgary Smith of Adams, Oregon,
together.
also has livened the Smith roster in the
NHSFR. Hell compete in tie-down
roping.
Houston Brown of Miles City,
Montana, also will honor the Texan
city. The 18-year-old is a four-time
NHSFR qualifier and will compete in
saddle bronc.
Kashin in
If youre riding for day money in a
rodeo, youre hoping for some quick
cash. In the NHSFR, you also might be
hoping for a quick Kash.
There are four cowboys who hope
to Kash it in with their ropes and three
others whod like to finish in the cash.
Kash Cattoor of St. George, Utah,
will compete for Arizona. The tie-down
roper also likes wakeboarding, surfing,
welding and snow skiing, in that order.
Kash Bonnett of Ponoka, Alberta,
will compete in team roping, as will
Kash Sigouin of Kamlopps, British
Columbia. Kash Miller of Mize,
Mississippi, will compete in tie-down
roping.
Cash Shegan of Chelsea, Michigan,
is making his second straight NHSFR
appearance in Gillette. Hell compete
in steer wrestling, tie-down roping,
team roping, light rifle and trap shoot-
ing.
Cash Wilson of Wall, South Dakota,
also will compete in saddle bronc rid-
ing.
Finally, Cashae McGee of Rhame,
North Dakota, hopes to cash in on
goat tying while in Gillette.
Cowboy names
There are plenty more where that
came from.
Sorryl Cannon will compete in light
rifle and trap shooting.
Justin Booth of Winnfield,
Louisiana, has tried on the National
Little Britches for size.
Theres also Creek Young of
Missouri, Brand Morgan of Montana,
and Rooster Yazzie and Quirt
Peterson of New Mexico.
Cutter Duckett of Wimberley,
Texas, will compete in team roping. He
hopes to cut out the team ropers from
Wisconsin, including Cutter Horne,
who also will compete in trap shooting.
Finally, theres an exclamation point.
Bronc Marriott of Woods Cross,
Utah, will compete in bareback bronc
riding.
