Free vibrations are oscillations about a systems equilibrium position that occur in
the absence of an external excitation. Free vibrations are a result of a kinetic energy
imparted to the system or of a displacement from the equilibrium position that leads
to a difference in potential energy from the systems equilibrium position.

Consider the model single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system of Figure 3.1. When
the block is displaced a distance x0 from its equilibrium position, a potential energy
is developed in the spring. When the system is released from equilibrium, the
spring force draws the block toward the systems equilibrium position, with the
potential energy being converted to kinetic energy.

The differential equation governing any SDOF system

Free vibrations occur in the absence of any forcing and as a result of an initial
potential or kinetic energy present in the system at t =0 por lo tanto Feq = 0
The undamped motion of a SDOF system is simple harmonic motion. The initial
conditions determine the energy initially present in the system. Potential energy is
converted to kinetic energy and vice versa without dissipation. Since energy is
conserved, the system eventually returns to its initial state with the original
potential and kinetic energies,
