OBJECTIVE AND EVALUATION OF OBJECTIVES


LESSON PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE/EVALUATION
The student will read the story The Giving Tree, and create a character trait diagram by listing at
least three physical and three emotional traits.

MATERIALS:
-Pencil
-Paper
-Example of Character Trait Chart
-The Giving Tree story

ANTICIPATORY SET:
Read to the students The Giving Tree, and begin discussing the story.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:
Today we are going to create a character trait chart of the two characters, the tree and the boy.

TEACHER INSTRUCTION:
We can use diagrams to compare many different things, from text to text connections, text to
self, and self to world connections. This graphic organizer, just makes it easier to identify the
characteristics of the characters in the story.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:


Draw a quick picture of the boy and the tree on each side of your paper. Im going to read the
story again. As I read, I want you to jot down traits that you notice throughout the story.

APPLICATION/GUIDED PRACTICE/INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: (2 points)


After reading we will discuss what the traits of the boy and the tree have. Compare similarities
and differences between them both. Also, talk about the evolution of the boy. (Did he change?
What characteristics changed when he became older?)

CLOSURE: (2 points)
Today we practiced finding and describing character traits of two different characters in the
story. We used a graphic organizer to help keep track of our ideas throughout finding different
traits.
