Summary of Avoiding the "It's a Small World" Effect: A Lesson Plan to Explore Diversity (Article 3):
Students deserve to experience other cultures because too often they arent given a good idea of what
other cultures are really like. Disney worlds Its a small world boat ride does a good job of quickly
showing you what over 100 nations may actually look like. This study would allow students to replicate a
piece of the Disney ride. After several students have replicated several different nations, they could
explain to each other meaningful information about their culture. This lesson is meant for younger
students, with an emphasis on 4th to 5th grade students. At the end, the last culture presented should be
an average American family living in Texas. The students will be asked to compare their outside culture
to our very own American culture. This will be shocking to both students and teachers as they see first-
hand what the young students think about our own American culture.
