Visual Reasoning

Presented By: Dwijendra B. Srivastava

Visuals are very important
OVERVIEW
The Myths:
Additional skills are required to solve a visual reasoning
question.
Despite a lot of practice, we cannot solve most of visual
reasoning questions.
There is no fixed approach or formula for solving visual
reasoning questions.
A visual reasoning question looks complex so it will be
difficult to solve.
It takes more time to solve VR questions than other
questions.
Different types of questions:

1 Odd man out

2 Analogy

3 Series

4 Similar pair

5 Dissimilar pair
1. Odd man out

(1) (2) (3) (4)

(5)

Non geometric figure

Example:

HINT:
Pick any two figure say c and d we observe only figure that contains
arrow their logic of movement is different so out of c and d one is our
required answer. Comparing movement of elements of c and b we get
their logic to be different. Hence c is the required answer.
2. Analogy

x2 x2
3 6 4 8

?
3 6 4 7
+3

+3 Wrong?
2. Analogy

In Analogy based Visual Reasoning the question

types are: (They should be answered in the foll.
order of priority:)
Four figures based analogy question
Five figures based odd one out.
Options figures that are either similar or dissimilar to
question figure. (Four options are either similar or
dissimilar to question figure and one is different)
Example:

?
(i) (ii) (iii) (iv)

1] 2] 3] 4] 5]
HINT:
Here we trace movement of elements from (ii) to (i) as we need to get fig (iii)
from fig (iv). In first figure exchanges its position with so 1 should
exchange its position with A. Hence except 3 and 4 all other options get
eliminated. Again observing movement of element 5 we can easily get
option 4 as answer.
While solving analogy question you should first pick:
Four-figures analogy
Odd one from five figures
The option is similar or dissimilar to the question figure
3. Series

InComplete theVisual
Series based givenreasoning
series the question types are:
Complete the series of five figures
Spot the error in seven figures where first and last
figures are correct
Interchange a pair of figure in the sequence to get a
correct series.
C. N. R. Rao
Odd one Out figure in the series
Approaches to tackle the Series Based
Visuals:
If you see many elements in a VR question, don't get
tensed.
Count the total number of each element or total
number of elements in one figure
Try to find out the relation between these numbers in
the following figures.
Sometime only some elements in each figure bear a
relation in the corresponding figures.
This whole process will take less than a minute.
3a. Odd one out in series

??
45o 90o 135o 225oo
180 225o
180 270o

(1) (2) (3)

 (4) (5)
Example:: odd one out in series
Example

1] 2] 3]
 4] 5]
The question figure may seem to be cluttered with a lot of figures, but we can easily
observe here that sum of numbers of arrows and circles is constant. Hence (4)

If counting doesn't work, pick any one element from the figure and try to trace
its movement. The transformations that the element can go through are:
Clockwise or anticlockwise direction movement
Half a space or full space movement
Lateral inversion (mirror image) or Vertical inversion (Water image)
A combination of these movements
3b. Series (last figure missing)

?
3 4 5 6 7 8
3c.Series (middle figure missing)

?
3 4 5 6 7
While solving the series question always keep in mind to solve
each question in less then a minute and order for prioritizing the
questions of the series questions should be:
seven figure series first, then odd one in the series,
followed by the five figure complete the series question and
lastly,
the questions that require interchanging figures to complete
the series.

Types of question that should be least priortized.
Although the figure seems simple these questions shoule be avoided as the
elements are similar and its difficult to trace the movement of an element.
Examples:

1] 2] 3] 4] 5]

?
(i) (ii) (iii) (iv)
