Challenge 1

The Wombats- Greek Tragedy

1) Combines both performance and narrative elements- storyline is easy to identify and
understand (storyline based around an obsession for people, in this case the band.)
2) Dark lighting used further into the video as the narrative element becomes deeper.
3) Towards the end of the song when it builds up, the storyline climaxes to match this pace (the
obsessive fan eventually killed the band themselves in order to put them on display for
herself.)

The influence this music video will have over my own product is that of the storyline reflecting the
lyrics and the visuals on screen reflecting the pace/ tone of the song.

Two Door Cinema Club- I Can Talk

1) Fast paced transitions- matches the pace of the song.

2) Lighting is used in order to make the transitions happen- as the lights flash the transitions in
scene commence.
3) Typical indie style of music video- features stereotypical props, instruments and clothing.
Therefore audience can relate back.

The use of the dark lighting which has bright flashes in order to show transitions is a feature which
isnt often seen in music videos. As this alternates from that of typical cutaway shots I may use this
within my own music video as it brings an unseen element to it- increasing the overall
professionalism of the product.

Drake- Questions

1) Simple setting used- one set has been built with a background that changes colour
2) The video itself looks very professional yet simplistic at the same time- only contains dancers
and the change in colour

Despite the music video having a simple style to it the overall appearance is still extremely
professional and gives the impression that the video is high budget.

Vance Joy- Riptide

1) The visuals on screen interpret.

2) Locations used wouldnt be considered expensive and therefore I could access similar
locations within my music video.
3) Dark lighting used in order to centralise the focus on the characters/ objects on screen.

Within my own piece of work I could use the ideology of literally interpreting the lyrics on screen in
order to create a music video. Although this cant be done for every lyric in my own song, it can be
done for specific sections of it such as the chorus.

J Hus- Bouff Daddy

1) Few locations used- that of a made up set with a black background and an exotic villa.
2) Simple editing used in order to duplicate the scenes (for example the J Hus can be seen
dancing and this has been duplicated in order to be shown on both sides of the screen)

Basic editing skills used through the duplication effect. I may consider using this effect within my
own music video.

Calvin Harris- Summer

1) Combines both performance and narrative elements to the music video. Shows Calvin Harris
singing alone and then cars racing
2) Bright lighting is used in order to reflect the positive tone of the music video

It is clear to see that the music video to Summer is high budget, this is due to the expensive props
used such as cars. This is an idea that I will not be able to use within my own music video, however, I
will be able to use the idea of lighting in order to reflect the mood of the music video. Bright lighting
is used in order to reflect the happy vibe the song has and this is a principle which I will take into my
own song. But instead the lighting will be darker in order to reflect the darker tone/ atmosphere.

Declan McKenna- Isombard

1) Performance music video which shows the artist performing, as well as including behind the
scenes footage of him touring.
2) Limited use of camera angles that range from close ups, to wide shots and mid shots. Not
excessive.

It is clear to see that the budget was low for the production of this music video, despite this the
performance elements and the use of camera angles gives a very professional overall appearance to
the video.

Milky Chance- Cocoon

1) The music video has a build up to it and the music video doesnt begin straight away, in
order to create a backdrop/ narrative for the video.
2) Dark lighting is used in order to reflect the tone of the music video
3) Disjuncture type of music video, however, it is clear to see that background and theory
behind the video. That of people abusing the power of someone they once cared for,
because the main female character has the power to turn things into gold.

Again, the lighting used reflects the overall mood/ tone of the music video. This is a concept I will
use within my own piece of work.

Glass Animals- Gooey

1) Lighting used isnt bright. Creates a mysterious mood which matches that of the tone of the
music video.
Luke Newcombe

2) A wide range of characters are used within the video- again adding to the mysteriousness of
the footage.

The only accept of this music video that I will aim to use within my own music video is that of the
dark/ low key lighting that is used in order to create a mysterious tone/ appearance to the video.
The video features numerous amounts of characters but this is an aspect which I do not plan to
contain within own music video due to the centralisation and focus I want to have on the
protagonist, and by using a variety of characters the audience could lose this focus.

Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen- Good Time

1) Lighting used is bright- the footage is filmed during the day. Reflects a positive/ upbeat tone.
2) Variety of locations- big city. Campsite party. Through the use of these locations the video
directly links back to the music videos target audience
3) The characters used are young and the costumes used are that of skinny jeans and crop
tops. Again, directly links back to the target audience of the artists themselves.

The costumes used directly link back to the target audience of the music video. This is a concept
which I will plan to use in my own music video in order for my audience to be able to relate to the
video more.

Catfish and the Bottlemen- Kathleen

1) Dark, red lighting used in order to match the tone of the lyrics of the song as well as
represent the theme of love.
2) Performance music video with a limited use of camera angles. Mostly wide shots and side
angle shots.

The controlled use of the camera proves effective as the audience fail to lose focus of the band
members themselves and have time to see the true emotion that the band is showing.
