CALCINED CLAY POZZOLANA

O. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Second Revision) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 30 December 1981. after the draft finalized by the
Pozzolana Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering
Division Council.

.1. I)ESIGN:\'I'ION
3.1 Calcined clay pozzolana shall be supplied in the following grades
corresponding to the properties specified in 4.1.

Grade Designation
Grade I For incorporation in unblended cement
mortar and concrete and in limc-pozzolana
mixture, and for manufacture of Portland
pozzolana cement
Grade II For incorporation in unblended cement
mortar and concrete and in lime-pozzolana
mixture
Ncn Calcined clay pozzolana of Grade 11 may also be used for manufacture of
Portland pozzolana cement by intergrinding method subject to the requirements of
IS : 14~~91976.
4. RA w :\1.\rfEr<J.-\LS
4.1 In selecting a clay for the manufacture of calcined clay pozzolana, past
experience of the usc of the particular clay under service conditions and any
experimental investigations arc good guides.
4.2 1\ number of clays, which have been investigated in India and have
given satisfactory results, conform generally to the following chemical
requirements on an oven dry basis ( at 105 "C ):

7. STORAGE
7.1 The calcined clay pozzolana shall be protected from rain and dampness
and shall be stored in such a manner as to permit easy access for proper
inspection and identification of each consignment.
NOT!:: - For guidance on storage at site, IS : 4082-J977 may be referred to.
8. MANUJ.'ACTURER'S CERTIFICATE
8.1 The manufacturer shall satisfy himself that the calcined clay pozzolana
conforms to the requirements of this standard and, if requested, shall
furnish a certificate to this effect to the purchaser or his representative.
9. DELIVERY
9.1 The calcined clay pozzoJana may be supplied in bags (jute, jute-
laminated, multi-ply paper or polyethylene lined) bearing the manu-
facturer's name or registered trade marks, and the net mass of each bag shall
be 50 kg.

9.1.1 The bags may also be marked with the lSI Certification Mark.
NOll: _. The use or the lSI Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the
Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act and the Rules and Regulations
made thereunder. The lSI Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys
the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that
standard under 3 well..defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which
is devised and supervised by lSI and operated by the producer. lSI marked products
are also continuously checked by lSI for conformity to that standard as a further
safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the lSI Certi-
fication Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from
the Indian Standards Institution.
10. SAl\IPLING
10.1 Samples for Testing and b)' Whom to be Taken - A sample or'samples
for testing may be taken by the purchaser or his authorized representative,
or by any person appointed to superintend the works for the purpose of
which the calcined clay pozzolana is required.
10.2 Procedure for Sampling - Each sample for testing shall consist of a
mixture of approximately equal portions selected from at Jeast 12 different
positions in the heap, when the calcined clay pozzolana is loose, or from
not Jess than 12 different bags or other packages, when the calcined clay
pozzolana is not loose: or where there is a lesser number than 12 different
bags or other packages, then from each bag or package. Every care shall
be taken in the selection to obtain a fair average sample. The final sample
shall weigh at least 5 kg for every 100 tonnes of material. The sample,
thus collected, shall be stored in a suitable container for being forwarded to
an approved testing laboratory.

11. 'rE~IS
Jl.1 The sample or samples of calcined clay pozzolana for tests shall
be taken as described in 10 and shall be tested in accordance with
IS : 1727-1967*.
1).2 All tests shall be carried out at the fineness at which it is supplied for
use by the purchaser.
