THE COUNCIL OF TRENT AND POST-TRIDENTINE THEOLOGY

After the revolution started by Martin Luthers protest the teachings of the Roman

Church, there intervened the Council of Trent which started as counter-protest to the Protestant

Reformation.

The sources of revelation were questioned inside the council, pondering which has the

primacy of revelation: The Scripture alone or the Tradition, handed down through the Apostles

and the Fathers of the Church? The council stated that there are no two different sources of

revelation rather, there is only one fount of Revelation, that is Jesus Christ and His word, as

presented in the Scriptures and the Sacred Tradition.

The council of Trent also emphasized the role of the Holy Spirt as the person who inspires

the apostles, the Fathers and the Church itself in their teaching.
