IMPORTANT RULES TO KNOW Only the end man, as eligible receivers, can release downfield on the snap. A man in motion who is clearly more than 1 yard outside of the end makes him eligible to go downfield. A blocked punt that does not cross the L.O.S.: a) Can be advanced by any member of either team. b) If the offensive team (Bucs) recovers it, we must make the necessary yardage for a first down to maintain possession. A blocked punt that crosses the L.O.S. is treated as a regular punted ball Allow the ball to roll as close to our opponents goal line and officially down it. Ifyou cross the goal line and carry the balll with you in attempt to down the ball inside the 5 yard line, itis a touchback. Itis interference, and can be penalized, if you interfere with the returner who signals for a fair catch. However, a muffed ball that touches the ground is free and belongs to the team that recovers it. Ifthe covering team (Bucs) touches the ball, but fails to officially down it, the receiving team (opponent) can advance the ball at no risk to themselves. NEVER touch the ball and walk away from it... Stay with the ball until you hear the whistle blow. ‘The opponents cannot block below the waist at any time during a kicking play. Coverage team cannot interfere with the free movement of a returner in his attempt to catch a punted ball. fair catch cannot be advanced, nor may the fair catcher be bumped or tackled. The returner can advance after a fair catch if the ball touches the ground or touches one of us an the covering team. When a kick from scrimmage is first touched beyond the line of scrimmage by the receivers and the kickers recover in the receivers end zone, it is a touchdown for the kickers. Previously the kickers were awarded the ball at the spot of first touch. ‘The punter has not protection when: a) The ball is touched first betore hitting the punter; b) The punter runs first then punts; ¢} Opponent is blocked onto the punter; d) If contact occurs during a quick kick; ©) if contact occurs after the punter recovers a loose ball gn the punter; ) ifthe kicking team forces or changes the direction of the punter. Anyone playing out ot position (jersey numbers) must report to the officials when aligning in punt formation. Entering substitutes on the punt team MUST MOVE ONTO THE FIELD as far as inside the numbers. This will apply to our Forcers. When we block a punt, we must understand the rules according to whether the ball crossed the L.O.S. or if the ball is behind the L.O.S. - A blocked punt that does not cross the L.O.S. is a free ball and can be advanced by either team. * - Ablocked punt that crosses the L.O.S. is treated if it hadn't been touched. Treat as “Peter’ situation. A punt that has crossed the L.O.S. and is first touched by the caverage team (opponent) is firstly illegal touching. Whistle blown immediately ... loss of 5 yards. GENERAL PRINCIPLES 1. 10, 11. Return men must take pride in catching punts ... both in practice and in games. You must know the opponents punter ... study film and scouting reports. We can not commit any penalties when on punt defense as many result in giving the opponent the ball back at 1st and 10. There is NO EXCUSE for being offsides. Disguise your responsibility ... make the punt team believe you are going to pressure the punter all the time. You must realize that we are getting the ball back when our opponent is, punting. Be an intelligent player and don't create a situation where we allow the opponent to maintain possession. You must have an honest belief that we can return punts for a score if you carry out your responsibility, On a wall return ... move the wall to the ball carrier. Commit yourself to your assignment and especially your block. Don't wait to see if we have a chance for a return before you block. We must do a great job in controlling the forcers to allow for a cushion for our retumer. Block all punts at the spot ... approximately 4-5 yards in front of the punter. Study film and scouting reports on the opponents punter. When we score ... let's get 11 men in the end zone. GENERAL DON'T OF PUNT DEFENSE NOT PEN Don't be offsides! Don't rough the Kicker! Don't clip downfield! Don't [et the ball hit the ground! Don't field a punt inside our 10 yard line! Don't block below the waist downfield! Don't call tine out if we are short personnel! Punt blocks and returns are opportunities for us to create the BIG PLAY. Our main objectives in punt defense are to obtain possession of the ball, establish field position and to score. A punt return for @ touchdown or blocking an opponents punt can be a great momentum builder for us and a demoralizer for our opponent. PUNT DE S. 1. Punt Defense is our punt rush and return phase of Special Teams. In some eases, it will also include leaving our Defensive Personnel on the field, 2. Weare getting the ball back in Punt Defense situations... Let not do anything to serew it up and allow our opponent to maintain possession of the football 3. Many punt teams do not huddle prior to their punt formation, therefore, itis very :mportant to hustle on the field and into our alignment. 4. We have the flexibility to utilize an 8, 9, 10, 83 or safe punt defensive alignment. 5. OO o) COD @O A AA K AAA 8 CONTROL THE COVERAGE We can take advantage if the fact that the interior linemen can not leave the L.O.S. prior to the punt by delaying their release into coverage. The bottom line ... hold them up at the L.O.S. as long as possible. FREEZE TECHNIQUE As always, disguise your responsibility. Make the opponent believe you are going to put pressure on the punter. 1 Drive off the L.O.S. hard and low thru the near hip of your assigned man’... knocking him back as far as possible yet maintaining control. 2, Slide to square up on your man ... make it hard for him to release. 3. Maintain a wide base upon contact and shuffle with your man. 4. As you get into your assigned man, SPY on the punter to assure there is no fake or that the ball might be free. 5. _ Inmany cases, your man would want to release outside ... as he does, widen him even further by extending your arms and stabbing him under his shoulder pad or at the hip. 6. _ - Maintain the leverage that you have established at the L.O.S. and run with your man downfield. Stay with him and let him come to you. 7. Never look to see if the balll is being returned ... commit to your man and take pride in your man not making the tackle. 429 oo A/A A | hj = A LOCK TECHNIQUE This is a 2 on 1 situation to control the opponents forcers .... Base 10 RUSH IMPORTANT KICKOFF COVERAGE RULES A kickoff that doesn't travel 10 yards is treated as follows: a) if untouched by either team and rolls dead or out of bounds, the kicking team is penalized 5 yards and must kick again. b) Ifthe covering team (Bucs) touches the ball, the receiving (opponent) can retum the ball, recover it, or let it roll dead and will have the choice to take the outcome of the play, spot where first touched, or have the bail kicked again from the 26. ) If the receiving team touches it but does not control it ... itis a free ball and belongs to the team that recovers it. Once a kickoff travels 10 yards, it is a free ball and belongs to the team that recovers it. When a kickoff goes out of bounds before the goal ine, and was un- touched, our opponents start at the 40 yard line. When a kickoff goes out of bounds before the goal line and was touched by the receiving team, itis the receiving team’s ball at the out of bounds spot. A kickoff that goes past 10 yards can be fair caught by the receiving team Should no one be in the area of the kick, the coverage team can catch the kick but can not advance it. A ball can be thrown backwards to another player on the receiving team and is a lateral. Any member of any team can push or pull an opponent out of the way to recover a free ball. However, he may not do so to allow a team mate to recover the ball but may block him above the waist The kicking team may not kick a free kick out of bounds between the goal line, The receiving team (our opponent) starts their drive at the 40 yard line. Following a kick after a safety , and the kicking team punts the ball out of bounds, the opponent automatically starts at the 50 yard line. KICKOFF COVERAGE TYPES OF KICKOFFS: 1. Holder ... acknowledge the rush prior to the snap and generaily bootleg to the rush side, ‘HURRY UP FIELD GOAL” There may be a situation when we want to kick a field goal with minimum time remaining on the clock and not time outs left. Make sure everyone is set ... give “ready” call and the snap will come immediately. All personnel cover after the kick. EXTRA POINT - FIELD GOAL BLOCK RULES When we block an extra point the bail is dead immediately and therefore no one can advance it. When we block a Field Goal, we must understand the rules according to whether the ball crossed the line of scrimmage or if the ball is behind the line of scrimmage. A blocked F.G. that does not cross the L.O.S. is a free ball and can be advanced by either team, A blocked F.G: that crosses the L.O.S. will come back to the original L.O.S. a) “PETER ... PETER’ = call to alert entire squad that the ball was touched by us, the ball is beyond the L.O.S. and to avoid touching the ball at ail costs. A missed F.G. that crosses the goal line is a touchback. Should the bail hit in the endzone and bounce back in the field of play, stay away from it as it will be tuled a touchback. ‘Any member of any team can push or pull an opponent out of the way in an attempt to recover a loose ball. However, you may not do so to allow a team- mate to recover the ball, but can block a defender to allow a teammate to recover a football. Alll Field Goals attempted and missed when the spot of the kick is beyond the 20 yard line, will result in the defensive team taking possession of the ball at the spot of the kick. On any Field Goal attempted and missed when the spot of the kick is on or inside the 20 yard line, the bali will revert to the defensive team at the 20 yard line. Defensive players are prohibited from blocking low during a Field Goal or Extra Point attempt (kick), except those defensive players at the snap that are lined up on or inside the normal tight end position. Previously all players an the receiving team could block low during the Field Goal or Extra Point attempt. GENERAL PRINCIPLES: 1 2. A Field Goal or P.A.T. is never routine. Carry out your assignments to detail Avoiding penalties are extremely imperative in F.G. and P.A.T, situations as they can be costly in the outcome of a game. Avoid touching the ball on our (defensive) side of the L.O.S.; "PETER ... PETER”, Be alert for change in personnel or in alignments that would tip off a fake. Communicate any tips to the entire team: ~ Change of posture by the holder; - Change of the holder, - Any change of T.E. and Wing personnel; - Obvious releases by either T-E. or Wing; Should an opponent shift out of their F.G. alignment and into a formation, we will audible to a “SAFE” call and quickly adjust to a specific defense according to game plan. “SCOOP and SCORE" on a blocked Field Goal that does not cross the L.O.S. We can never be aligned offsides (especially with less than 5 yards to go for the first down) and never rough the kicker. Go for the spot when blocking kicks. We will avoid the catastrophe in this aspect of the kicking game by understanding the rules, avoiding stupid penalties and concentrating on our assignments. Many teams tend to “take it easy’ or think it will take care of itself. Nothing short of an all out effort is expected of you. Our organization for personnel in the game for Field Goal Block will be!
