QUIZ Week 7 Physics 101, Fall 2016 Due: November 9, 2016

Throughout the quiz, please show ALL of your work and box your answers!
Reminder: always include units with all your numerical answers!
Problem 1. A blackbelt in karate chops a board in half with her hand. Just before contacting the
board, the forearm has a rotational speed of 40 rad/s. Just after breaking the board, the forearm
has a rotational speed of 20 rad/s. The board breaks in 0.004 s. Her fist is 0.32 m from her elbow
joint and the rotational inertia of her forearm is 0.050 kg m2 .
a. [2 pts] What is the rotational acceleration of her forearm while in contact with the board?
Assume the rotational acceleration is constant during this time.

b. [3 pts] Draw an extended force diagram for her forearm and determine the average force her
hand exerts on the board while breaking it. You may assume that the force that the board exerts
on the hand is much larger than any other forces on the hand/forearm and so these other forces
can be neglected.
Problem 2.
A pencil of mass m and length L initially balanced vertically on its tip falls over. The figure below
shows the pencil after it has already started falling. As it falls, the point of contact with the ground
does not move. Treat the pencil as a uniform rod with rotational inertia I = 13 mL2 about the point
of contact.

a. [3 pts] What is the rotational velocity of the pencil just before it hits the ground? Draw a
graphical representation to support your answer.

b. [2 pt] If the pencil had an eraser of mass mE , what would the rotational inertia of the pencil
about its point be?
