SNOWPIERCER

- SCENE ANALYSIS

In Bong Joon-Ho SnowPiercer, the film explores many different political and ethical
issues, in order to portray the overall message to the viewer. In the scene with
Minister Mason, the character outliners major political agenda as well as this the
correlation of power in relation to the train and this is clearly displayed with the
camera work, as well as directors position of the character Mason. Mason is
positioned centre of the screen as well as stood up and therefore in contrast to back
passengers of the train who are sat down this creates an
easily visible contrast in power as well as authority in the characters, and this is
emphasized by the use of a low angle shot as it allows the viewer to see the
character Mason in a more exaggerated and more dramatised fashion and because
of this it creates a more sinister feeling to the viewer. The isolation of the hand is has
major significance throughout the train as the same action is repeated by Wilford at
the end, this emphasizes the structure as well as the mechanical workings of the
train which is a direct representation, as well as this it rewards the viewer for
following and understanding how significant this scene is to overall film. The camera
work is massive part of the scene as overall it helps dramatised as well as create the
connection between the character and how they are living this is done by the use of
shots in which the back of the train is all neilled before Mason, this helps the viewer
understand and this helps create the power dynamic which is displayed through the
scene, and because of this it help porgess the political agenda displayed throughout
the train.

As well as this in the scene the editing is a major aspect in allowing the viewer to
understand the contrast between the hierarchy of the train. The editing especially
when it highlights and the crossing cutting between the speech and the punishment
in which is received for not following the rules, this emphasizes the importance as
well as the power in which is instilled in the front of the train. IN this scene there also
many times in which the J-Cut is used and this is used especially when the
punishment is being enforced and this was done in order to make sure that the
viewer still focuses on cruelty being implied on the the passengers as well as this the
it help increase the theme of power as Mason completely blocks out the act, and this
suggests to viewer that this common in the train. The cutting to the shoe has major
significance due to the fact that a shoe is such a mundane and everyday item can be
used to protect themselves and their family, this emphasizes the depreate nature
they are in at the back of the train.

Mise en scene, is a crucial part in the film industry as this help establish the themes,
and in this is scene it done by the use of colour as everybody who is designated to
the back of the train is wearing dark colours however in contrast to Mason who is
wearing a luxxury and vibrant brown fur coat, this is important understand how
different to the front to f the train iws to the back. The man themes which are present
in the scene are political divide between the frog and the back of the train, and in the
scene the colour is the major aspects as well as this the clothing in which they are
warear due to the fact that the bakco of the train are wearing old rags, in which you
could probably relate to a prison atmosphere, unlike the more sophisticated and
higher quality clothing this helps the viewer visualised the divide more easily..

Throughout this scene the sound being used is primarily, the speech of Minister
Mason, and this is important in understanding the power dynamic in which exists on
the train. Her speech is very monotone and personally because of this it gives me a
more political motive to what she is saying as it can be easily related to the modern
day political system, as well as this there are times in the speech in which Mason,
will use pauses in order to create more dramatical effects as well as it is used in
order to allows the back passengers to think and comprehend the punishment in
which is in places for such a minimal crime in relation to the train law system. The
sound of the punishment is also prominent in this scene as it allows the viewer to
understand the heartless nature of the Mason as well as the guards, because of the
cruel punishment, and because of the huge contrast between the justice system
normally and shocks the viewer as you would've never thought this would be the
outcome of throwing a shoe at someone.

- THEME ANALYSIS

There are many different themes in this philosophically-focused science fiction film,
as many there are lots of issues in which need to be overcomed as well as the
deepening understanding of the train. The theme which is portrayed throughout the
film is balance and this is seen in each specific section as well as this it is revealed
that this was planned as Curtis is manipulated emotional to order to begin the riot, in
order for Wilfred to re-establish balance within the train. This theme help progress
the story as Curtis initial believes that everybody in the back of the train is doing this
in order to better themselves and not the train however it is revealed that Gilliam is
working with WIlfred in order to establish balance from the back to the front of the
train. The decisions in which Curtis is making are seemed throughout the film to be
massively important however at the end after the reveal of the planned riot this
meant Curtis has achieved the goal in which wilfred intenend and because of this he
is offered to run and manage the train, this is most important decision in the train and
because of the deaths in which he has caused means that balance is restored, and
although you could argue that he has contributed to the deaths of many you can also
see that he has tried to better the social structure of the Train, and the final decisions
is fatal as it can be seen negatively on the deaths on everyone on board just to gain
revenge for the deaths of his friend. The contrast in poverty and wealth is a massive
difference as economically the way in which the back passengers are treated and
this creates a hatred as well as jealesouly of the front, this is what inspires the riot as
well as this the major contrast allows the viewer to understand what is happening as
it create a clear visualization of the divide. A scene in which this is provient is when
they are all getting there protein block and latter on the Curtis eats sushi in which is
served in the front of the train. Another theme in which is present in the film is the
theme of responsibilities and this is seen from start to front, this is when curtis
refuses at the beginning to be recognised as the leader of the back train as Gwilliam
insist he is the man for the job although after watching the film it is clear to see that
Gwilliam had some alternative motives for this, as well as this Curtis refuses the
chance to run the entire train, this is a examples of not taking responsibility and
because of this more people have suffered. Nam goong min soo also presents the
theme of substance abuse in the form of Kronole, this substances has massive effect
on his life although such a negative thing it seems to bring him and his daughter
closer together and therefore this interlinks with theme of family, although the drug is
the main reason in which sees Nam helping curtis in trying to get to the front of the
train, this is is important in understanding the reasoning and the circumstances
leading to the more underlying motives of Nam as he want to leave the train. Finally
the theme of freedom and lack of it is a theme in which is seen towards the end of
the film and this is understood by curtis as he doesn't want to to be a slave to the
machine of the train and therefore decide to destroy it, and therefore causing the
deaths of many in order to save his own freedom as well at the beginning he want to
be from from the mundane life and this is extracted by the use of repetition of similar
scenes in which i they are counting the back passengers in order to make sure that
there is balance.
