Materials and Methods

We searched on PubMed and JPMA using key words such as depression, anxiety, medical students,
burn-out, depressive disorder, stress, distress, mental health. We have been reading articles published
between 2006 and 2017.

We used the HAD test to evaluate both depression and anxiety, and we also added a few questions in
order to asses some more factors that we consider relevant for the topic.

Background

We had 3 main reasons that determined us to conduct this study.

First of all, the results, the results of the studies previous made regarding this topic were different one
from another and, second of all, there was no study on this specific subject developed in our country. As
an example, most of the studies concluded that first year students had the highest level of stress,
whereas others consider that the amount of stress increases as the college years pass by.

In the end, there were reported cases of suicide among college students, not only in Romania but also
from abroad. Therefore, we wanted to verify is the students asre mentally strong and healthy or if there
are under a significant psychological stress that could lead to drastic measures.

Key words: depression, anxiety, medical students, stress, distress, HAD, Europe, Romania, first year,

Conclusion

In conclusion, medical students are under a high level of stress, and a significant number of them suffer
from depression , anxiety or both. The main reasons that lead to this are the amount of study load and
the busy schedule. Also, the most affected are the juniors and females.
