MICHAEL T10\\fBES DAY

NOVEMBER 28, 201 7
WHEREAS, Michael Towhes, who began a successful real estate development
career more than 60 years ago in Santa Barbara, founded The Towbes Group
through which he developed and managed more than 6, 000 residential units for
affordable and workforce housing, and 1. 8 million square feet of commercial
properties, primarily in the Tri-County region; and
WHEREAS, Michael Towhes founded Montecito Bank & Trust, the largest
locally-owned community bank in Santa Barbara, which, built on the principle of
making the communities it serves better places to live and work, has since grown,
through his leadership and philanthropic vision, to 10 branches, 1. 3 billion in assets,
and has donated over 15 million dollars to local nonprofits; and
WHEREAS, Michael Towhes's passion for giving back began early in his career
as a developer who helped build the community, and as a community leader who
served on and chaired innumerable local nonprofit boards, continually setting the
example for philanthropic giving with programs such as those he created at The
Towbes Group, including the Give Where You Live program which donates a
portion of daily revenues to nonprofits in Santa Barbara and the Tri-Counties; and
WHEREAS, The Towbes Foundation was created in 1980, and now donates over
$900, 000 annually to more than 300 organizations, ranging_from social services to
education to the arts, and provides an avenue for continued philanthropic giving
from Michael Towbes'sfamily, and,
WHEREAS, this day marks the remembrance of a an extraordinary man, Michael
Towbes, a loving husband and father, a smart businessman, and a dedicated
philanthropist whose legacy will always have a profound impact on our community;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, HELENE SCHNEIDER, by virtue of the authon"ty
vested in me as Mayor ofthe City ofSanta Barbara, do hereby proclaim November
28, 2017 ''Michael Towbes Day" in Santa Barbara, California.
