ABSTRACT
This research work investigates the water balance of the watershed of Eordaios river in which the operations of
the Lignite Center of Western Macedonia (LCWM) take place. The extensive opening of lignite mines and the
operation of lignite power plants in the basin, cause a lot of environmental problems with one of the major to be
the disturbance of the water balance of the watershed. The investigation is concentrated in the analysis and
elaboration of geographical and hydrological data that concern the basin of Eordaios river. Methods of GIS are
used for the surface integration of the hydrometeorological parameters and in combination with the use of the
water balance models, contribute to the extraction of conclusions and suggestions relatively with the operations
in the LCWM.
