ME/T/414/27/2016 B. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING EXAM.-2016 (4 Year, 1* Semester) REFRIGERATION AND AIRCONDITIONING Full Marks ~ 100 ‘Time ~ Three hours Refrigeration tables and charts, Steam tables and Psychrometric Charts may be used if necessary. Problem no. 6 is to be solved by using Psychrometric Chart and such chart is to be enclosed with the answer script. Missing data (if any) be assumed consistent with the problem. Answer any five questions. Q.1. a) What do you understand by the term “one ton of refrigeration” b) A carnot refrigerator operates between the temperatures of -50°C and 50°C. If the COP is to be made 4 by changing the temperatures such that the decrease in upper temperature is equal to the increase in lower temperature, determine the new temperatures. ¢) A reltigerator unit working on Bell-Coleman cycle takes air from cold chamber at -10°C and compresses it from 1 bar to 6.5 bar with index of compression being 1.2. The compressed air is cooled to a temperature of 5°C above the ambient temperature of 25°C before it is expanded in the expander where the index of expansion is 1.35. Determine: i) the COP of the refrigerator unit the quantity of air circulated per minute for production of 2000 kg of ice per day at 0°C trom water at 20°C. iii) the capacity of the plant in tons of refrigeration. ‘Assume of air, Cy=1 kivkg k and R=0.287 kidkg k. Take the cnthalpy of freezing of ice=335 kJ/kg and the specific heat of water=4.1868 ki/ke k. 446+10-20 Q2. a) Plot on the same p-h planc the ideal and the actual vapour compression refrigeration cycles and then explain in brief the reasons for the essential differences between the above two cycles. b) A simple saturation cycle for vapour compression refrigeration system using Freon - 22 is designed for a load of 10OTR. The saturated suction and discharge temperatures are 5°C and 40°C respectively. Calculate the following: i) the mass flow rate of refrigerant ii) the theoretical piston displacement of compressor iii) power consumption of the compressor iv) the COP of the cycle v) the heat rejected in the condenser ‘Take the specific heat of vapour as 0.65 kj/kg k. Also represent the above cycle on p-h and I-s planes. Now mention the flow paths of absorbent and refrigerant. What are the ‘most common fluid pairs used in vapour absorption reftigeration system. 'b) Steam at 3 bar and 0.85 dry is used in the generator of a vapour absorption refrigeration system. The evaporator of the refrigeration system is maintained at -10°C. The circulating cooling water rejects hheat at 30°C in the condenser. Determine COPmex for the system. Also, if the steam leaves the ‘generator as saturated liquid, determine the consumption of steam per hour for 10 ton refrigeration plant. Assume relative COP as 0.4, 10+10=20 Q.5.a) Define the term specific humidity of moist air. Derive the expression of specific humidity in terms of partial pressure of water vapour in moist air and barometric pressure.
