Stam tables and Psychrometric Charts may be used if necessary. Problems on Psychrometry are to be solved using the Psychrometric chart and such charts are to be enclosed with the answer script. Missing data (if any) be assumed consistent with the problem. Answer any five questions. Q.1.a) What do you understand by the term “one ton of refrigeration”. ) Explain in brief why the reversed carnot cycle is not practically possible? ©) Sketch the flow diagram and T-S diagram of an ideal vapour compression refrigeration eycle and name the different components and processes of the cycle, 4d) A camot refrigerator operates between the temperatures of -50°C und 50°C. If the COP is to be made 4 by changing the temperatures such that the decrease in upper temperature is equal to the increase in lower temperature, determine the new temperatures. 4454546-20 Q.2.a) Draw the flow diagram and corresponding p-h diagram of a liquid to suction vapour heat exchanger used in a vapour compression refrigeration system. b) Plot on the same p-h plane an ideal and an actual vapour compression reftigeration cycles and then explain in brief the reasons for the essential differences between the above two cycles. <) A simple saturated vapour compression refrigeration cycle is working on R-134a at evaporating temperature of -10°C and condensing temperature of 40°C. Calculate the followin i) the refrigeration effect in KI/Ke ii) the input compression work in KJ/Kg iii) the COP of the cycle Also represent the above cycle on the p-h plane 5+8+7=20 Q3.a) State the reasons for introducing the concept of volumetric elliciency of a reciprocating compressor. b)_A refrigeration plant works between -10"C evaporator temperature and 30°C condenser temperature, determine the clearance volumetric efficiency of a reciprocating compressor if R-22 is used as refrigerant, The clearance should he taken as 3% of the siruke volume. ©) State the function of the capillary tube in a domestic refrigeration system. 4) Write 2 short note on “Designation of refrigerants”. 4-64545=20 Q4 a) Draw the schematic diagram of a vapour absorption refrigeration system and label the different components of the system. Now mention the flow paths of absorbent and reftigerant. What are the most common fluid pairs used in vapour absorption refrigeration system. Also define the term COP for a vapour absorption reitigeration system. Contd ... The circulating cooling water rejects heat at 30°C in the condenser. Determine COPma, for the system. Also, if the steam leaves the generator as saturated liq determine the consumption of steam per hour for 10 ton reftigeration plant. Assume relative COP as 0.4 12+8=20 Q.5 a) Define the terms specific humidity, relative humidity and degree of saturation of moist air.
