"The Burning of Sto. Domingo Church" by Fernando Amorsolo.

Example of historical painting of Fernado Amorolo, it depicts the destruction of the Sto.
Domingo Church brought about by the tremendous fire that occurred in the 1940s.

The first casualty of the ever-loyal and royal city of Manila was the neo-gothic gem of the
Dominicans, Sto. Domingo Church which houses the venerated Queen of Manila, Nuestra Seora
del Santissimo Rosario, La Naval de Manila. It was said that after an incendiary bomb was
dropped on the church, once located at the present site of the Bank of the Philippine Islands in
Intramuros, the fire blazed for three days to the frustration and dismay of the Dominicans and
the people of Manila.. Amorsolo brilliantly captured the raising of the church. In a miraculous
twist, the image of La Naval survived the fire as it was locked up in the vault or camarin for safe
keeping just after her October feast. It was one of the landmarks of Old Manila and frequented
by devotees because of the alleged miraculous image of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary,.
She is now housed, along with other valuable items from the old church in the new Sto.
Domingo along Quezon Avenue in Quezon City where the great festivities and pageantry of Old
Manila continue to this day.
