Charity Run; Blisters for Bread

B.E.S.T. Educators in action doing it for our learners

On Sunday the 27 August 2017 thousands of people gathered at Cape Town
Stadium ready to take part in the annual Blisters for Bread walk.
The Blisters for Bread walk is a charity event that was started in 1968, by
concerned staff and pupils at Savio College in Lansdowne. The Peninsula School
Feeding Association is a NPO that has provided meals to school children in the
Western Cape for 60 years. The feeding scheme has grown over the years,
when they started out, kids only received soup with a slice of bread. Now the
school-feeding menu includes 10 different food items every week. These
include proteins such as soya, omega 3-rich fish and beans. Carbohydrates
include samp and rice while fruit and vegetables such as carrots, butternut,
fresh oranges and apples are served daily. The cost of the daily meal is R2, 50
per child.
As B.E.S.T. College is a beneficiary of the Peninsula Feeding Scheme the staff of
B.E.S.T. College decided to participate in the Blisters for Bread 2017 walk. The
weather was perfect for the Sunday walk and the staff had great fun with the
masses in Cape Town, supporting the feeding scheme.
The 11 of us met bright and early on Sunday morning, grateful for the clear
skies. We got walking around 08h30 and kept up a steady pace. The walk was
very pleasant and was not taxing at all. The staff were proud to represent
B.E.S.T. College and to be able to support a worthwhile initiative.
