Biocompatibility and Biodegradation

Polydopamine is a polymer imitating melanin that occurs naturally in organs

and tissues.

Determination of the possible toxicity of polydopamine was initially peformed

in vitro using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium. The result
was that this polymer did not disturb the viability or proliferation of mammalian
cells. Also, the polydopamine nanoparticles did not induce obvious cytotoxic
effects.

Owing to its satisfactory biocompatibility and biodegradability, polydopamine

has greater potential for biomedical application.
