Polydopamine is a polymer similar to melanin found naturally in organs and tissues. Tests showed this polymer did not reduce viability or proliferation of mammalian cells and nanoparticles did not cause cytotoxic effects. Due to its good biocompatibility and biodegradability, polydopamine has potential for biomedical applications.

Polydopamine is a polymer imitating melanin that occurs naturally in organs
and tissues.
Determination of the possible toxicity of polydopamine was initially peformed
in vitro using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium. The result was that this polymer did not disturb the viability or proliferation of mammalian cells. Also, the polydopamine nanoparticles did not induce obvious cytotoxic effects.
Owing to its satisfactory biocompatibility and biodegradability, polydopamine
