Lesson Title: Reflecting on a Chapter Lesson
Time Needed: 45 minutes
State Standards: RL.4.1, RL.4.2, RL.4.3

RL.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when
drawing interferences from the text.

RL.4.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

RL.4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details
in the text (e.g a characters thoughts, words, or actions)

Objective and Goals

Students will identify the main character of a portion of a text, the setting, and the event
that is taking place.
Students will identify relationships between characters and their actions.
Students will interpret meanings in the text based on what the text says, and draw
conclusions from that.
Students will write a short summary of that section of the text, expressing the relationships,
setting, and the events using examples from the text to support their summary.

Materials Needed

A copy of the assigned text for each student


White board
Dry erase markers

Discussion

As a class we will discuss the chapter that the students read as homework. Talking about the
different characters, their relationships, and events of the chapter.
Compile a list of class input on the board throughout the discussion.
Discuss how to write a summary. Give examples of Good, OK, and not good.
Activity

Students will discuss further the chapter and what they felt about it in small groups of 3-4,
making predictions of what might happen next.

Check for Understanding:

Ask for questions, did everyone understand the chapter?


Individually, students will write a 1 paragraph summary on the chapter using the details that
we discussed as a class.
