Forming
- (establishment/assembly of the team, little agreement, unclear purpose)
- For example, This is the stage where the team is put together and the team
as a whole needs guidance and direction as everyone wants to be the leader
and do what they want, not what's best which leads to conflict.
Storming
- (conflict, strife, power struggles, possible increase in purpose clarification,
competition)
- For example, the conflict stage or storming, is where the team is in disarray
and disagreement. The team cannot decide anything and end up arguing.
Norming
- (agreement, consensus, facilitation, roles, relations)
- For example, the norming stage is where the team develops relations with
each other and begins to dissolve conflict by establishing a common goal and
clear roles and responsibility.
Performing
- (focused, achievement, success, fulfilment)
- For example, after the team has established a clear vision and purpose, the
team begins to perform and achieve work and task in order to reach the
common goal.
Adjourning
- (task completion, achievement, recognition, moving on)
- For example, this is when the team has completed the task or goal in hand
and no longer has a purpose so members of the team then move on to other
projects or tasks.
Bruce Tuckman's theory leaders and for example, managers of a business, to better
understand how a team will act and behave in a teamwork environment and
situation. This is helpful as they can have a better understanding in how to manage
the team and/or change certain things based on predictions from Tuckman's theory.
