The moment in any aspect, two people of different genders are viewed or judged

differently, gender inequality is present in that situation. (C) As we are moving into a
sophisticated era, the fact that women, who are at most times the victims of gender inequality
has undergone a metamorphosis. Major differences are evident in gender inequality in the
past and present. Roles of a woman has gone through a paradigm shift
because married women nowadays, compared to the past have more
freedom in terms of household responsibilites, taking up a new job, and
share a better relationship with husbands.

Firstly, married women nowadays, have more freedom in terms of household

responsibilites compared to women in the past. Young girls or daughters in the past, before
marriage, are trained to be a perfect future wife in an Indian culture. Not only that, the
daughter-in-law of the family (if is from a lower caste) has to take responsibility and to be
blamed if anything goes wrong in the household. This scenario is totally different from the
scenario of married women in Swiss. Swiss women are given the privilege to share their
household responsibilities with their husbands. Women get to choose what they want and
what they intend to do- showing they have more liberty and voice to speak up. Nevertheless,
high number of divorce cases even in the past shows that women, although are given liberty
are not happy. On the other hand, wifes of the new generation, despite working or studying
still takes charge of the household responsibilities. A working woman, gets up early to prepare
meals for the day or does it right after she returns from work. However, they are helped by
their husbands from time to time. Women are in charge of bringing up their families and their
goals is to create a positive family life, but their private interests, hobbies and friends are not
a hitch in achieveing their ultimate goal; to create a positive family life.

When viewed from a different scope, women in the current era have the freedom to
take up a job although they are married. In the past, married woman are exected to work for
the new family. From taking care of the needs of her husband and her husbands family till
household chores, it all goes to the women in the house. Due to this scenario, girls in the past
did not even get an opportunity to pursue education as at the end of the day, when they are
married, all they have to do is to serve a new family; where the education goes to waste.
Although married women in Sweden do work, very minute percentage of women are Swiss
professionals. Most of them, take up female types of work such as teaching, nursing and
clerical jobs. However, in the current time, most societies accept working women. The Civil
Rights Act in 1964 are one of the turnovers for women to have the liberty to work. For example,
in New York, the number of police women are increasing. Despite, the arguments on
capabilities of women compared to men in this aspect, the enlargement of Civil Rights Act in
1972 has made it possible for women to take up this job freely. Minor chages such as using
the term police officer instead of police man and police woman, providing smaller revolvers
and having a police station ladies room became a boon for the women. Moreover, this
scenario not only took place in New York. host Oprah Winfrey, Michael Obama, Princess
Diana, JK Rowling, Malala Yousofzai are proofs women, throughout the century have
succeeded in their on way be it in the entertainment sector or the social sector.

The third point is, married women in the new era have better relationship with their
husband compared to women in the past. In the past, wifes are seen as an object to take care
of their husbands. Wifes do not get to voice out and husbands are superior. As for Indian wifes
they are not even allowed to express their love for their husbands in front of the other members
of the family. They maintain their distance with their husbands when other family members are
present. On the other hand, Italian women have no knowledge of their husbands life outside
their home. Italian wifes are confined to stay at home; to serve the family and has no voice on
anything. Instead, they trust their husbands loyalty and wait for them to come back home each
day. The two scenarios proves that wifes in the past had a cold relationship with their
husbands. On the contrary, wives in the present share a great relationship with their husbands.
Couples in the current era share stroger bond of friendship. For example, when the maried
couple are not working- on their day offs, spend a lot of time doing outdoor activities together.
They even go camping where the husband does the cooking (Research Bank). Not only that,
women who do not take up a job by themselves, do help their husbands with their private
bussiness and the husbands and the elders of the family are not against it. It can be inferred
from these situations that there is a friendlier bond between husbands and wifes in the current
era. Husbands who allow their wifes to help them at work simply proves the trust in the
relationship. Married women are not confined at home and are not expected to serve the family
and take care of the husbands confort only. They now contribute to the society yet do not
overlook at their responsibilities as a woman.

To deduce, women in the past have been treated as a subservient where their feelings,
voice, and freedom are confined by their men or the society. A woman in the past only lived
for the expectations of the society, she had no chance to have a meaningful life. This differs
with women in the present, who have the choice to choose what they want to do and live as
they want to regardless of jobs, positions and responsibilities they hold. As we evolve into a
nano-technological era, women activists are becoming more active as they do not want the
history to reoccur. Confining a person just because of her gender is equivalent to clipping the
wings of a bird and expecting the bird to soar high in the sky. From all the research done about
how women had lived in the past regardless of their nation shows that gender inequality does
more bane then boon. Therefore, as Pearl S. Buck quoted in her book, Of Men an Women;
Men and women should own the world as a mutual possession.
