The K To 12 Program

As we all know Department of Education(DepEd) implemented a new curriculum called K-12

education system under the administration of President Benigno Aquino III which I guess is a
very crucial step of his administration. And when Pres. Aquino decided that we want to
approved the K-12 curriculum many people reacted on his decision on approving this program.

And this is are some following question of many people regarding on this program:

1. What is K-12 program implemented?

2. What has been done to get ready for this k-12 program?

3. How will the current curriculum be affected by k-12 program?

4. How will multi-grade teaching be affected by K-12?

5. How will students choose their Senior High Specialization?

6. Will SHS ensure employment for me?

7. How will SHS affected by college education?

8. Will the additional 2 years of SHS mean additional expenses?

This is are the frequently asked question of many people. So today I will discuss about K-12
education system has in store for us. Why K-12 is implemented on our country it is because the
Philippines is the last country in Asia one of only three country nationwide with a 10 years pre-
university cycle and a 12 years program is found to be the best period of learning under basic
education. This is also recognized the standard for student and professional globally. K-12 is a
program covers with 13 years basic education. S.Y2011-2012:Universal Kindergarten
Implementation begin,2012-1013:Enhance curriculum for Grade 1-7,2013:K-12 enhance into
law and last 2014: Curriculum for Grade 11-12 finished. The current curriculum is not affected
because current curriculum has been enhanced for K-12 and now gives more focus to allow
mastery of learning and changes of specific subjects are detailed in K-12 Curriculum Guides.
Multi teaching cant affect it is because multi-grade teaching will continue and will use to the K-
12 Curriculum. Students will undergo assessments to determine their strength and interests.
SHS creates a standard requirements will be applied to make sure graduates know enough to
be hireable. You can apply for TESDA National Certificate(NC) and Certificate of
Competency(COC) to provide you a better work opportunities. K-12 cant affect your college
education because this ensures that by the time you graduate from SHS, you will have the
standard knowledge, skills and competencies needed to go to college. And SHS will be offered
free in the public JHS completers as well as ESC beneficiaries of private school should choose to
take SHS in Private Institution.

So this program is a product of globalization actually which proposed by Department of

Education(DepEd) to improve the quality of education and graduates of Philippines. And
according to survey of the World Bank, Philippines had the highest youth unemployment rate.
So the ultimate target of the K-12 program would be to reduce the youth unemployment rate.
The 2 years of SHS would provide time for consolidate acquired academic skills and
competencies. The system aims is to fully enhance and develop the student in order for them to
be well-prepared especially emotionally and cognitive aspects. Through this, graduates will be
able to face the pressures of their future workplace and also pursue their education abroad.
And as we all know that Philippines largest export is it's OFW's, the manpower itself. There are
occurrences that Filipino Citizen abroad would want to continue their education abroad but
often get rejected because of the lacking two years. The K-12 program will help vanish the
disappointment and Filipino's instead of only sticking to labor force can also become a foreign
student abroad.

The lower middle class of our society will definitely be benefited because their children can join
labor force after they graduate their school but the only trade off would be the additional 2
years. K-12program will not bring the qualitative standards of education. This additional 2 years
can decrease the youth unemployment rate and their would be a more or many opportunities
for student. I think that this is the time for us to support all the decision for k-12 of the
government rather that criticizing it because According To Albert Einstein and Nelson Mandela
" Education is what remain after one has forgotten everything he learned in school" and Lastly
" Education is the most POWERFUL WEAPON we can use to change the world".
