Radio Programme Analysis

The station Ive researched is Capital FM which is the UKs No.1 hit music station that plays music
new and old in the charts. This station is a national station but it is mostly depending on the area
youre in for the station to play. This radio station has other programmes (sister stations) such as
Capital Xtra, Classic FM, Gold, Heart London, LBC 97.3, LBC News 1152, Smooth London and Radio X.
The radio station is an ongoing radio station but has presenters that are swapped regularly so this
would make Capital FM a daily playing radio station. The target audience of Capital FM is audiences
in the 14-35 age group, I know this because the music that is played is in the charts which is mostly
for younger people such as teenagers and young adults as OAPs wouldnt listen to pop music or
house music, they are more than likely to listen to classical. The presenters that are on Capital FM
are Roman Kemp and Vick Hope who do the Capital Breakfast every weekday from 6am-10am and
on Saturdays they do it from 6am- 9am, they gossip a lot on their shift as well as playing the hottest
tunes on Capital FM. After that they have Ant Payne on who again does presenting every weekday
from 10am-1pm, he also talks about the world of showbiz when hes presenting in-between music,
following with Bassman on weekdays from 1pm-4pm and Sundays 6am-9am. There are also
presenters who only work daily such as Will Manning who presents on Saturdays at 4pm to 7pm and
Rob Howard who again presents on Saturdays at 9am-12pm, these two presenters also keep you
updated on the charts and if songs and artists are moved up or down the chart list. There are then a
few more presenters that do it more frequently such as JJ who does Thursdays and Fridays 10pm-
1am and Sundays 8pm-midnight and Marvin Humes who presents Monday to Thursday 10pm-1am
and Fridays 7pm-10pm.

Capital FM also have two programmes that are the Capital Weekender which plays the best music in
the charts such as house music over the weekend except Sunday and its played for 8 hours straight
and they also have Vodafone big to 40 which is played on Sundays 4-7pm. The ratio of the radio
station is half and half, so about 2-3 songs are played and in-between that there are small
discussions, adverts and competitions that are involved to keep the audience entertained this is
because they keep a consistent role of how theyve set out the station so they will play a few songs
and talk for a bit and this will repeat and repeat which is a good rota as the regular people in the
audience who listen to the station will know when they will finish playing the music and start talking,
it is also good for audiences who like certain presenters because as they will know the different
times of when they will be on the radio or not so they can be ready to listen.

. The presenters use very phatic communication and they use loud, clear voices to make sure that
there audiences can hear them, mostly all of the presenters have accents that are easily
understandable and if theyre not understand able as much as the other presenters they will be in
group time slots for two presenters to present together. The music played throughout the day is
charts music but when it gets later to about 8-9pm its mostly remixes played on Capital. The
content used in the show is adverts, competitions and music, from having all three of these things
included in the radio station it keeps the audience entertained and will attract more people to listen
to the radio station, this is because they will start off by playing music and in-between two to three
songs they will have a chit chat about different topics and have viewers ring in to talk to them, they
will also play adverts to keep people updated on latest buys and they will sometimes have a
competition which will include having to answer a question or guessing the missing lyric in a song for
a chance to win a holiday or a trip away. From capital using all this content they will determine the
audience by playing certain songs that will interest people like the songs in the charts, this will
attract people as Capital is well known for the chart toppers they play, the one thing that will push
the audience away is the repetition of the same song more than 3 times in the day. From looking at
data for this specific radio station Capital FM altogether, they have had about 8.6 million people
listen to the station, which means that Capital FM has reached 14% of the population which isnt as
good as other Radio Stations but it is still well known and the average person will listen to the radio
station for about 5.6 hours a day.

In conclusion I found out that Capital FM out of all of the radio stations there are isnt the best one
because of the statistics shown on http://www.rajar.co.uk/ but I know that Capital FM has a good
plan of their station and how the programme goes from the different presenters on the show and
the time schedules they each have, the presenters also use loud clear voices and entertain the
audience through the topics they talk about and the music they play to keep the population of
listeners on a rising trend.
