Name of Lesson: Latitude & Longitude Name: Karen Fombona

Grade Level: Subject: Education Standards Addressed: 4.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of
Earth Science the physical and human geographic features that define places and regions in
California.
4th 1. Explain and use the coordinate grid system of latitude and longitude
to determine the absolute locations of places in California and on
Earth.
2. Distinguish between the North and South Poles; the equator and the
prime meridian; the tropics; and the hemispheres, using coordinates
to plot locations.
3. Identify the state capital and describe the various regions of
California, including how their characteristics and physical
environments (e.g., water, landforms, vegetation, climate) affect
human activity.
4. Identify the locations of the Pacific Ocean, rivers, valleys, and
mountains pass and explain their effects on the growth of towns.

Overview & Purpose: This lesson will be about latitude and longitude. In this lesson we will go over what
latitude and longitude is and also how to use latitude and longitude to determine distance and location
on Earth.
Objectives Students will learn how to find a location on Earth using Materials Needed
(Specify new skills the PowerPoint
longitude and latitude. By using latitude and longitude presentation
student will gain as a students will be able to locate places using a grid and degrees Blank world map
result of the lesson; Index cards
of latitude and longitude. Students will also learn about the Giant world map
focus on student (not) special lines of latitude and longitude such as the equator and Colorful needle pins

prime median. Students will also gain new vocabulary that worksheets
they may not have know such as: equator, prime median, and
special lines of latitude and longitude such as Tropic of
Cancer, Artic Circle, international date line etc.
Warm-up and/or The warm for this lesson would be a game. I will have the
Review
students in groups and then pass out a blank world map. The
(Connect current
students will then have to fill in and name the continents and
lesson with
oceans. I believe this will be a nice warm up to the latitude
previous lessons;
and longitude lesson because it will give the students an idea
help students get
of location and with the activity it would be more easier once
in mood for class;
NOT teacher they have their map all filled out.
dominated)
Introduction/Prese I will use my PowerPoint presentation I have made on
ntation
longitude and latitude and talk about the basics of the subject.
I will introduce the new vocabulary and define the new
vocabulary to the students in order for them to understand
what we are learning today. I will also focus on explain the
differences between latitude and longitude so the students do
not get the 2 confused. In the PowerPoint I will cover all the
content needed in order for the students to be able to do the
activity planned later on. My PowerPoint will include; how to
find a location using longitude and latitude, the special lines of
longitude and latitude (prime meridian, equator Arctic Circle
etc.), and the differences between longitude and latitude
(degrees, how the lines run either horizontal or vertical, uses
of North South, East, West).
Practice/Activity I will have the students do is a Where in the World? Resources Needed/Used
worksheet where the students are given 8 questions and each
question has some latitude and longitude coordinates and the Atlas book
students have to figure out which country they find in those Common Core
coordinates. The worksheet will be a group work assignment
in order for the students to be able to elaborate and work Standards
with each other. Then as an overall class I will give each Huge World map
student and index card with coordinates on them and have a
huge world map in front of the class and each student will Education World.com
have to get a colorful needle pin and pin their location from
the index card on the world map in front of the class. I believe
this is a fun and active activity in which students can really
understand the concept of latitude and longitude.
Student In a way the second activity is a student evaluation because I
Evaluation
can see which students understood the lesson and which
students still need help on. When students pin the correct
location on the map I know they understood the lesson but
when it isnt correct I know which students need help with the
lesson. I can also give out a little quiz at the end which will
also tells me which students understood the lesson and which
students still need more help.
Contingency Plan If my PowerPoint is not working I will use the white board
and write out my lesson on the white board and my students
can follow along taking notes. As for my activity if I dont have
the worksheets or a huge map I will write down or look up
random coordinates and go over the location of the
coordinates as a whole class. Using a globe or even an Atlas
book.
Teacher Self- For a self-evaluation I will simply ask my students how they
Evaluation felt about the lesson. I will ask them what they enjoyed or
what they didnt enjoy. I will also ask them if there is a way
they prefer learning such as PowerPoint lesson plan or hands
on lesson plans. I believe this will be very helpful feedback
and will let me get to know the way my students like to learn.
Knowing the way your students like to learn is very beneficial
and helpful in creating future lesson plans for them.
