Exercise 4

The design of the document in figure 5-16 titled Child Safety Keep your little one safe
when you fly comprises of rules and guidelines from the Federal Aviation Administration to
parents on how to properly keep children safe during air travel. This document although
interesting to read could have communicated the message more effectively to parents in the
following ways:

1) Using numbers instead of bullet points: Using numbers in the design of the document in
figure 5-16 from most important to least important safety tip would also help
communicate the message better to the reader

2) Proper use of headings: Headings highlights the main points in a document and also make
it easier for readers to retrieve specific information in your message. Separating the bullet
points in figure 5-16 into numbered headings and explaining each heading would have
the greatest impact on the users ability to read, understand and remember the safety tips.

3) Line Spacing: Proper use of a double line spacing in figure 5-16 would also make the
document more readable and communicate the safety message better to the readers.

4) Consistent Design: Consistency in design of a document makes for easy reading. The
design format in figure 5-16 was also not consistent. The fourth bullet point was
formatted differently from the rest of the document. Formatting the document into one
consistent design would communicate the message more effectively to the reader.
