Recast Proposal

For the music video, The Story of O.J. from musical artist, Jay Z, I decided to choose a

comic strip as a new median to display how past racial stereotypes and beliefs about African

Americans impacts the success and growth of individuals belonging to a minority. Choosing a

comic strip allows for the opportunity to sum up the video using only images and certain key

words to get the point across. Using comic strips for this video will give those who enjoy comics,

which can mostly be young adults, an understanding of the message Jay Z shares in his song.

The message portrayed will reach a larger audience, allowing individuals who may not enjoy rap

and hip-hop music but do enjoy comics, a chance to understand the importance of the topic. This

median is important to the audience because it reaches to the younger generation, which is

important for a subject that needs immediate attention for the issue to be potentially resolved in

the future.

For the comic strip, I plan on making a multipaneled strip from a piece of white computer

paper. The images on the comic will be in colored pencil and marker. The reason for using color

will allow the issue to seem more relevant unlike the music video which is set in black and

white. The marker will be used to add emphasis when needed and the color pencil will add the

rest of the colored details. Each panel will express an important idea or point made within the

video or research paper, using roughly six panels.

To complete the comic strip, I plan to section the video in six different parts, pulling out

important information from each one and coming up with a basic summary for each section. This

will allow me to come to an understanding of what image or scene will best display the main

overall message portrayed in the video. From this point, I will just need to draw and color the

images and add any text that may be needed to explain the image. The only concern is creating a

chronological line to display the events and meaning of the song without repeating any image or

ideas from the images already created.
