Assignment # 1
Subject: Instrumentation and Process Control (th)
Assigned date: 21/09/2017 Due date: 05/10/2017
Q.1 Which of the following statements are true?
a) Feedback and feed forward control both require a measured variable.
b) The process variable to be controlled is measured in feedback control.
c) Feed forward control can be perfect in the theoretical sense that the controller can
take action via the manipulated variable even while the controlled variable remains
equal to its desired value.
d) Feed forward control can provide perfect control; that is, the output can be kept at
its desired value, even with an imperfect process model.
e) Feedback control will always take action regardless of the accuracy of any process
model that was used to design it and the source of a disturbance.

Q. 2 Consider the air heating system used to regulate the temperature in a house (Fig. 1). The heat
is supplied from the combustion of fuel oil.
a) Identify the control objectives, the available measurements and manipulated variables.
What are the external disturbances for such a system
b) Develop a feedback control configuration to achieve your control objective.
c) Is it possible to device a feedforward control configuration to achieve your control
objective? Justify your answer.

Q. 3.
Consider the heat exchanger shown in Figure. Identify:
(a) The control objectives for this system.
(b) All the external disturbances that will affect the operation of the
exchanger.
(c) All the available manipulated variables for the control of the
exchanger in the presence of disturbances.
