Language and culture

Language has been defined as the systematic, conventional use of

sounds, signs or written symbols in a human society for communication
and self-expression. The purpose of language is to communicate with
others. Culture on the other hand has various meanings. Culture is the
total of the traditional and natural ideas, attitudes, beliefs, and
knowledge including forming the common bases of social action. The
relationship between language and culture is definitely related as one
cannot function without the other. I mean that for someone to get or
gain knowledge, values and ideas that someone must first be able to
communicate with others familiar about that specific culture.

Language and culture are important human abilities. The ability to

create a structured language for communication is what makes humans
and our culture different from others. Humans learn their culture
through language and foreign cultures. There is a strong relationship
between language and culture. The relationships between language,
thought and culture have been one of the myths of language for
centuries. Language as one element of culture has a very important role
in human life. Language allows a person communicating with others in
meeting their needs. Culture is the whole communication system that
binds and allows operation of a set of people called the public.

Language is a major component and supporter of culture as well as a

primary tool for transferring message, which is inextricably bound with
culture. Learning a second language also involves learning a second
culture to varying degrees. On the other hand, language is influenced
and shaped by culture. It reflects culture. Cultural differences are the
most serious areas causing misunderstanding, unpleasantness and even
conflict in communication.
