I WILL SURVIVE
Song Lyric Annotation Mini-Project

For this project you will be required to

produce three things:
1. A SONG you like, that has lyrics that you can clearly
mark with at least five annotations! You must choose
wisely. No explicit lyrics or content please. You must
have your song approved by Mrs. K!
2. A KEY for what you annotated. (example at the end of
the packet)
3. A short PRESENTATION in front of your peers.
(__points?)

Follow these steps carefully and you w ill survive this

assignment! Use this as a checklist as you work your way
through the tasks.

Step 1: RECALL
Think to yourself. What w
ould a survivor song sound like?
Do you know any songs a bout s urvivors? What comes to
mind?

Step 2: SEARCH
In computer, lab use Google to find and select a song. (No,
you may not go to Youtube because I want you examine
lyrics, not listen to songs.)
Note: when you google, please think about your word
choice. How can you be most efficient in your search?

Write down some phrases you could search for:

Step 3: SELECT
Choose up to three songs that you are interested in
reading the lyrics for.
Write the Title and Artist here:

Option 1: SONG TITLE:____________________

ARTIST: _______________________
Year released:___________________
Option 2: SONG TITLE:____________________
ARTIST: _______________________
Year released:___________________
Option 3: SONG TITLE:____________________
ARTIST: _______________________
Year released:___________________

Step 4: NARROW
Now read the lyrics to your potential song choices. Read
each set of lyrics three times.

read one: merely read through the lyrics

read two: read the song through again, remembering

the annotation piece of this project. Does you song
have FORESHADOW OR FLASHBACK? How about any
CONFLICT? Or do the lyrics contain any IMAGERY?
Lastly, are there any SURVIVAL SKILLS in that song?

(If your song contains none of these, go back to STEP 4

and repeat.)

read three: ask yourself, do t hese lyrics have enough

for me to annotate for this project? Remember, the
final piece you turn i n for a grade must have at least
five clearly marked a nnotations.

If your song does have these fun elements, advance to:

STEP 5: CHOOSE
Choose your song and have it OKed by Mrs. K. Write your
song info here and have her sign it!

SONG TITLE:____________________ Mrs. Ks AOK

ARTIST: _______________________ ___________
Year released:___________________

STEP 6: PRINT
Once your song l yrics have been selected and Oked, print
them up! Do not print anything without the ok from the
teacher.

STEP 7: ANNOTATE
The goal of annotating your song is to show off what you
know about annotation so far! Remembering all the pieces
we have talked about, mark-up that text!
You m
ust have at least five annotations on your text when
you a re done.

Did you find any literary devices in this song? What are
they?

Did you find any survival skills in the song? What are they?

Lastly, is there anything else you wish to annotate? So
what? Who cares? Why did you select this song?

Step 8: MAKE A KEY

You will provide a key to your annotations that clearly lets
the reader know what you were noticing in the text. If you
want to use symbols, pencil underlines, highlighter etc, fine,
but you must use a system and stick to it and you must
make it clear to the reader what you were noticing.
Remember, the point of annotation is to clearly mark a
text for deeper understandings and for future reference
for look back.
Step 9: PLAN PRESENTATION
Using only one side of a 3x5 notecard, please answer the
following questions for your presentation.
1. Why did you choose this song?

________________________________________
2. What did you annotate and why?

3. Can a listener learn anything about survival from this
song? What lesson(s) might they learn?

Step 11: IN-CLASS PRESENTATIONS

The final piece of this project is presenting your annotated
song to the class.
-You will use the ELMO to display your song and annotations
on the board in front of the class.
-You will read your song lyrics aloud to the class
-You will state the gist of the song
-You will highlight what you annotated and why!
All that you need to say to present should be on your 3x5
card.
Attached is a rubric that you will be graded with.
ANNOTATE THAT SONG!

Here are some codes weve been using but also a space
for you to establish some of your own.

*REMEMBER* annotations are meant to be

1. quick and simple! (but neat)
2. there for future reference (not messy)
3. labeled consistently throughout the text at hand.
