Directions: On your own answer the following questions. When
you are finished get into groups and discuss your answers,
1. Why is it important to build relationships with staff at your
school site?
2. What are skills that one should have in order to be able to
build relationships?What is a Relationship?

+ There are different types of relationships: friend, work, romantic, and family
relationships.

+ Trust- the foundation of good relationships.
+ Mutual Respect- respecting those that you work with, and valuing their
input, ideas, and they value yours.

+ Acceptance of Diversity- accepting opinions and welcoming them.

+ Charles Berger and Richard Calabrese created this theory to “explain how
communication is used to reduce uncertainties between strangers
engaging in their first conversations together’ (1975).

+ Uncertainty causes discomfort
+ Reducing uncertainty happens by asking questions to new
acquaintances in order to obtain information about them.

+ Information gathered can be used to predict behaviors, or
outcomes of beginning a relationship with others.
Pm According to Calabrese and Berger there are three stages through
which uncertainty reduction advances (James, 2016):
+ Entry- exchange of demographics (ex: occupation, place of origin).
+ Personal- sharing more personal information (ex: attitudes, beliefs, and
values).
| + Exit- determine whether interaction will happen in the future or continue
a relationship.
