Motivation/Opening/Intro:

Today we are going to continue talking about the water cycle. We talked about the first stage
of the water cycle yesterday called ____________

Students respond (Evaporation)

Now we learned about two very important parts of evaporation yesterday. We need _____ from
the sun, this turns water into water __________!

Lets take a look at our experiment from yesterday! Think about what you notice is different
about the water in both jars now versus yesterday!

Have all the 1s go over and look at experiment first. Then the 2s.

We notice that there is now more water in the jar with the lid! Where did the other water
go?

Students turn and talk to partner. Sharing ideas.

Development:

Students pull out booklets

Another part of our water cycle is a step called Transpiration, lets take a look at the blanks
here. Knowing the information we learned yesterday lets try to fill this out! Evaporation of
water from leaves and stems of plants. Water can evaporate off of plants, animals and even
us!

Pull out glass of water and ice cubes. Have student drop ice into glass.

Today we are going to talk about the next step in the water cycle. As all these tiny water
droplets get warm and goes up into the sky it starts to cool off. Now when water vapor finally
gets cool and it does something called condensation.

Write condensation on the board and show cloud visual

This step of the water cycle is called Condensation. When the water condenses it turns into
clouds! Now water can also condense on things like cool glasses, maybe the bathroom mirror
when you get out of the shower!

Return to the glass of water.

What do we notice about the outside of our glass? What we are seeing on the outside of our
glass is called condensation! Those water droplets in the air are cooling off because the glass
is cold.

Closure:

Have students return to their desks and take out booklets.

Next we are going to fill out our notes on condensation! Explore this with a partner and see if
you can fill in the blanks! After you both finish I want you to get out a scrap piece of paper. I
want you to draw what you think of when you hear the word condensation. What does it look
like?
