Fall 2017 Mathematics Framework Questions

In order to teach mathematics in the elementary classroom you must know the

principles, which are Focus, Coherence, and Rigor. The standards curriculum will also

help build a mathematical foundation by providing curriculum, instruction, assessment

and accountability, made to support students. The classes I have observed have prepared

me by having first hand real experience with students who struggle and students who

succeed in understanding mathematic lessons taught by teachers. When students struggle

with a math problem, students are assisted by teachers providing hands on materials and

real world examples to help students have a clearer understanding. Students are also

placed in groups to help solve the problems by discussion and critical thinking, where

students have different approaches to a single math problem. While some students find

some approaches more clear than others, students select which is clearer to them. The

areas of mathematics I feel well prepared on are Pythagorean theorem, geometry and

area. I feel less prepared in statistics, fraction, and word problems. The examples I plan to

share in my portfolio are types of triangles, where you must justify or disprove a type of

triangle. It demonstrates my math ability to be able to classify different type of triangles

such as obtuse acute and right triangles, which connects to what Ive learned in the

reading of the mathematics framework in the overview of the math framework by

showing my work and writing the facts of each of the triangles and the accuracy of the

information that I provided.
