This paper aims to analyse and draw some useful practical lessons in adopting the CMMI standard
(or approach) for Vietnamese software outsourcing firms. Based upon the analysis of the case of FPT
Software, i.e. the difficulties the company tackled, the paper synthesizes and draws 8 useful practices
(or lessons). They are: (1) Commitments from the top management; (2) Planning sufficient capital
resources; (3) Human resources development and improvement; (4) Foreign language as a key; (5)
Development and improvement of project structure organization and management; (6) Turning quality
norms into corporate culture; (7) Developing effective tools and methods; and (8) Using professional
consultancy. These practices are good lessons for Vietnamese software outsourcing firms to refer to
and to learn from when adopting the CMMI standard in order to improve and enhance their product
quality and competitive competence in the global market of software outsourcing..
