Carlo Gesualdo

He was born between 1560 and 1561 in Venosa, Italy.


His brother killed himself at the age of 19 and because of this, Carlo Gesualdo
became a young prince.
He achieved showing his lonely and stormy world through his best resource,
madrigals.
Besides being a composer, he also was an alchemist.
Gesualdo was the forerunner of the expressionism and that's why his music
was radical and original. It was composed by extraordinary and common
elements. His biggest composition is Moro, lasso.
In 1589 he married Doa Mara D Avalos, their wedding had a lot of food.
From this relationship a boy was born. Gesualdo insisted that this boy was the
result of an affair, which was the reason that motivated Gesualdo to kill his wife
and her lover.
After committing these homicides, Gesualdo chopped his castles forest.
Sometime later, a second son was born. Gesualdo also made him to get killed
because, as before, he thought it was the result of an affair.
This case was taken to court. They decided that the assassination was
justified, so no actions were taken.
After these multiple homicides, Gesualdo began his highest musical activity
period.
Long time later, Gesualdo moves to Ferrara (Old Italian state, it was known as
the musical Mecca of that period). Living in Ferrara, he decided to get married
with Princess Leonora from the East House.
After living together, Gesualdo started to mistreating her, it became so rude
that she used to describe her life as " unbearable, basically a life inferno".
When Gesualdo comes back to his castle, Leonora didn't come with him,
contrary to this, she goes with her step brother who was a priest. After spending
some time together, they start an incestuous relationship.
About the last 16 years of Gesualdo, we only now that he turned into an hermit
in his castle and that he was melancholic, tormented by demons, remorse and
sins.
In 1611 he composed his last Madrigals Book.
We know he died by asthma or as a torture victim in September 8th 1613, in
Avellino, Italy.
